After watching Fury Road a few times, I think it's a easy order...

• Fury Road
• Mad Max 2
• Beyond Thunderdome
• Mad Max

Really interesting to see the differing views on this; some have got the first movie as their number 1 and others as bottom of the pile. I was even surprised to see BTD ahead of Mad Max 2. It shows we all see things differently. Personally, I think it's a shame to see MM1 suffer a bit as it now looks light on spectacular action; it laid all the foundations mind and could be argued that it was harder to do on its low budget than what was done with FR with megabucks.

I'l be watching Fury Road for the second time on sunday, then I will wait a few years and then I may share my opinion on it.

I must have been in my early teens when I watched Road Warrior for the 1st time, and it made such a lasting impression on me that I just can't judge it completely objectively. Alongside Terminator 2 it is just one of my all time favourites. It's a timeless classic, not sure Fury Road will stand as such a classic, despite being technically 'better' in most ways.

Thunderdome seems to be what many younger think of when they hear the words Mad Max, and I hate that. I want people to think of RW, but I don't hate BT as a movie in itself. It's not a bad movie, but it feels too 'constructed' to me. It's like they wouldn't let George do just what he wanted with that budget, and sometimes it feels like a parody of RW and the whole genre. I think the whole part with the kids is better than Bartertown, and it feels like that was the story Miller wanted to tell, and the bartertown pices were just thrown in to make it 'more Mad Max'. And the costumes and music just dates it too much for me.

The original I didnt watch until I was an adult, had to get it shipped around half the globe on dvd, without Norwegian subtitles, but luckily with both original sound and dubbed version. I thought it was a bit slow and depressing and ended so suddenly, the first time, but the chases and filming was so awesome that I have had to rewatch it several times, and I like it more and more each time.

1. Mad Max 2 (probably my favourite film ever - looks magnificent, perfect action dynamics, hard-edged and ominous tone, powerhouse performance from Gibson, amazing haunting score, fantastic characters)

2. Fury Road (very good without quite being the masterpiece others make it out to be, but better than we had any right to expect)
3. Mad Max (groundbreaking and has brilliant elements, but I struggle to get around how dated it is at times)
4. Beyond Thunderdome (Looks beautiful and some wonderful ideas, but a badly-garbled, often-nonsensical plot spoils it)

This is tough and may be to early to judge for me at this point.
I just saw Fury yesterday for the second time and it's awesome...like another poster said, a lot better than we had any right to expect. Along with JC's the Thing, the Road Warrior would be my favorite movies all time. The Thing 2011 wasn't horrible but wasn't even in the ballpark with JC's the Thing. Fury Road to me is a totally differnt animal of course. I saw the Road Warrior first a couple years after it came out at a college. I was maybe 19 or 20. I then saw Mad Max which I liked a lot. BT was a major let down and being PG didn't help. Kids were laughing during a scene when Max is handing in a billion guns and then again when a bad guy gives the finger....grrrr.
So my opinion may change but for now Fury Road will be a tie for me right now. In time in may slide to second or slide Road Warrior down to 2nd, again time will tell for me.
