If you've seen them all..
1. Mad Max 2; it's still the Holy Grail of post apocalyptic cinema, as good as Fury road is, it still didn't affect me like this movie did.
2. Fury Road/Mad Max; I cant separate them. Fury Road with it's massive setpieces and real sense of epic screams out but it seems almost unfair to compare such disparate movies especially when the first has such little resources but showed such imagination and was so original/groundbreaking. I can only tie them at this point.
3. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome; not a total disaster with some striking visuals but the lack of meaningful violence/threat combined with the the lack of vehicle mayhem always puts this last for me. It's even worse when the final chase with the imagination of the road train, the designs of the vehicles and the stunning cinematography should for all the film's flaws have resulted in a setpiece at least equivalent to MM2, especially with an increased budget. Did no one look at that chase and think, jeez, this is light years behind what we did 4 years ago?
Would love to hear everyone else's rankings...

1. Mad Max 2
2. Mad Max
3. Fury Road
4. Thunderdome
Fury Road just wasn't the Mad Max movie I've been waiting for. but I pretty much expected that. Even though I put it third it's way above Thunderdome. I did the trilogy last night, hadn't seen Thunderdome in ages, and I forgot just how "meh" it was to me.
To be honest though in the theater tonight I was kinda "meh" about Fury Road too. I was hoping there'd be moments where I was smiling with enjoyment but it just didn't happen. I should mention it was my first time in a theater in a very very long time, not sure if that somehow affected the experience.

1 - Mad Max 1 / Mad Max 2
They tie for me... Mad Max 1 had more detailed characters, and the opening chase was by far the best... However MM2 had cool cars and better action sequences
2 - Fury Road
Not bad, had more original Mad Max influences than I anticipated, but didnt leave the same impression the others did (wont spoil it too much for those havnt yet watched)
3 - BT
I wouldnt say its bad, the character, Max is consistent across first 3 movies, but the theme in this one isnt. It could easily be watched as a stand alone film

I'll be amazed to see MM3 anything other than last.
Is there anyone out there who prefers BTD to any of the other movies??

For me the list is:
1 Fury Road/MM2
2 MM1
3 BTD
"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

I don't think you can call them a quadrilogy. Fury Road is it's own beast. Sure there was a lot of tidbits for old fans, but it just doesn't fit in with the original three.
As far as ranking them goes I'll have to watch Fury Road a dozen more times before I can compare it with the others.

Yeah, but if you were buying a boxset, then you'd expect all four movies to be in there

Would be nice to see all the newbies post on this thread, I think us that have been around for a year or more on here, kind of have a fair idea of each other but I'd be particularly interested to see what anyone who had never seen a Max movie before would rank them in what order, especially if they have just watched Fury Road and then found time to watch MM1 to MM3.

1. road warrior.
2. fury road.
3. thunderdome.
4. mad max.
mad max seems just a little slow to me. not that i need a bunch of action, and it's a semi decent job of world building it's just not the strongest to me. hell, take it out of the equation and it can be nearly an entirely different film/genre.
thunderdome while kind of goofy and adding max as an afterthought; is still pretty entertaining. i'd say it has just as much influence on the post apocalyptic genre as roadwarrior.
that's a little how i think about fury road. where instead of a bunch of kids in the crack of the world meeting max, you have 5 wives and furiosa meeting max. i REALLY wish someone other than max narrated it.
