We'd like to get permission to use the opening bits. Anyone know any contacts for this sort of thing?

Rights holders on the first Mad Max movie are either:
MGM
Kennedy Miller Mitchell
Warner Brothers
Possibly all three have some claim actually.
Your chances of getting a response on permission to use clips from the movie is next to zero. Your chances of actually getting a "yes" response is even closer to zero. Sorry. Doesn't mean you can't try, I suppose. But you're more likely just going to earn yourself a C&D letter from their legal dept by calling attention to yourself. (Cease and desist).
I'm not a copyright attorney, but your best bet might be to look up "fair use" as it pertains to IP (intellectual property). I don't think your songs will qualify as fair use, but they might. It's probably your best shot.
Regardless, keep making kickass music.

Yeah I hear ya. The problem in doing these things is that sometimes duplication places have a rule. Most of the time as in with covering material if you sell under a certain number of copies or only produce a certain amount there is a form and $50 to get the publication rights. With movie pieces I'm not sure.
Thanks BTW. Mad Max films have been a big inspiration for the band so it was really cool finding this site.

I may be wrong, but i recall something that you can use a few seconds of copyrighted footage etc... in displays or clips with infringing copyright.
Anything longer you need permission and no doubt a lot of money.

Changes depending upon purpose and country.
For review or parody you can use excerpts. If you make a profit off it, the studios will probably come after you.
Sheeeit, lawyers specalize in copyright law, it's that complicated.
I remember a band called KLF that bulldozed a truckload of their albums into a field as it would cost more to clear copyright that the albums would ever sell for.
