Queensland flooding crisis

Post by roadwarriormfp »

For those outside Australia who dont know, there has now been one of the biggest floods in decades with half the state of Queensland underwater and its only getting worse.
Yesterday in the town of Toowoomba a massive flash flood passed through the middle of town and litteraly carried away cars.
There are 8 confirmed dead and up to 72 people missing just in the one town.
Gympie is cut off and its town center is underwater.
Dalby has gone underwater 4 times in 4 weeks.
Rockhampton is still recovering, Ipswich, Condomine, Bundaberg, Stanthorpe, Chinchilla, Malany, the list is endless...
Death toll set to rise after flash floods

Updated 1 hour 4 minutes ago

Mother nature has unleashed something shocking out of the Toowoomba region

– Queensland Premier Anna Bligh

I think they're all a bit amazed at what's happened and it's really taken them by surprise, but at the end of the day they've got enormous ability to stick together

– Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones

The death toll looks set to rise while a desperate search for survivors begins in the wake of devastating flash floods across southern Queensland yesterday.

Eight people are dead and 72 missing after flash floods hit the Darling Downs city of Toowoomba and several smaller townships in the Lockyer Valley.

Among the fatalities, four people died in Toowoomba, two women and a child died at Grantham and nearby at Withcott police say nine people are missing.

At least 50 people have sought refuge in a primary school at Grantham.

Police say more than 40 people were rescued from rooftops by helicopter overnight.

The flood threat is today expected to extend to the state's capital, Brisbane.

The Defence Force is joining the search for scores of residents missing in the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane.

The area was devastated yesterday afternoon when flash floods that have been likened to a tsunami swept through the region.

Premier Anna Bligh says a major incident room has been set up in Brisbane to coordinate a rescue operation.

"All possible resources, including ADF resources, will be activated at first light tomorrow to begin further search and rescue," she said.

"We will be getting out at first light to continue the search for those who have been notified as missing and to continue the rescue efforts for those who have been stranded on rooftops.

"We've certainly had some unconfirmed reports of further missing people in the Grantham area."

Ms Bligh says the latest developments have stretched emergency authorities.

"We've already called on helicopters from northern New South Wales and they are stationed here ready to take off at first light," she said.

"The scale of what is unfolding in the Lockyer Valley and again in the south-west will test our resources and we have plenty of offers of help from other states and we'll certainly call on those as we need them."

She described the flash flooding at Toowoomba as a freak of nature.

"Mother nature has unleashed something shocking out of the Toowoomba region," she said.

"What we have here in Queensland is a very grim and desperate situation."

Federal MP Ian Macfarlane says he spoke to the Prime Minister last night about the devastation in Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley.

"Buildings that have been there for over 100 years had water into them and then burst windows," he said.

"All floor stock has been swept down the river. Individual small businesses will have been devastated. There'll be structural issues with the buildings themselves. Bridges and roads have been torn up."

Community in shock

Residents in the Lockyer Valley are still reeling after yesterday's devastating flood.

Mayor Steve Jones says everyone is in shock.

"I think they're all a bit amazed at what's happened and it's really taken them by surprise, but at the end of the day they've got enormous ability to stick together," he said.

"They've been through many bushfires and that sort of thing and the community spirit is fantastic and they'll make it happen."

Police say the Warrego Highway is closed indefinitely at the Toowoomba range and at Glenore Grove in the Lockyer Valley.

The highway is also closed at the Gatton bypass.

Further west at Chinchilla the river is expected to reach seven metres and an evacuation centre has been set up.

The weather bureau's Brett Harrison says severe weather conditions are set to continue today.

He says more rain is forecast for the Darling Downs and further north in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

"Everything is so saturated at the moment that it doesn't take too much rain to increase the water levels on the ground at the moment, so it's going to continue until we see the upper low weakening and moving away," he said.

Threat spreads

The flood threat is expected to extend to the state's capital today.

The Brisbane City Council says more than 200 homes and businesses along the river are at risk.

Most of those properties are at Rocklea, Albion, Milton and Auchenflower.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman says the flood threat is real and that residents should heed the warning.

"We are giving you a scenario at the moment that people can actually plan on and make preparations on," he said.

"We hope it doesn't happen, but if it does and we didn't tell people, then they'd quite rightfully be upset."

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale says he does not expect the city's CBD will be flooded when the Bremer River peaks at noon.

But he says several homes at Karalee could be swamped.

It's gotten worse now, Brisbane CBD is being evacuated as the river breaks it's banks. Ipswich is being evacuated since they're expecting a 19 meter peak there.

Multiple city suburbs and starting to swim, dozens and dozens of towns have been affected, evacuated and a few pretty much wiped out.

So far there a 8 confirmed dead, up to 72 missing, 5 unconfirmed deaths and an untelevised rumor of 30+ deaths in Toowoomba.
Also I have come across word of 50+ people shacking up in a Grantham school which has since been destroyed and no word of anyone yet.

I will keep updating the significant parts if people wish.

Brisbane on edge ahead of catastrophic flood peak

Updated 1 hour 50 minutes ago

Authorities are urging people to stay calm as Brisbane and Ipswich prepare for unprecedented flooding over the next two days.

Heavy rain, releases from the giant Wivenhoe Dam and high tides will combine to cause major flood peaks in both cities in the next couple of days, with river levels rising above the historic 1974 floods.

And a four-year-old boy's death in Ipswich has taken the Queensland floods death toll to 10.

"We are facing one of our toughest ever tests, we will only pass this test if we are calm," Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said.

"Now is not a time for panic, it is a time for us to stick together."

Authorities say about 6,500 properties could be flooded as the Bremer and Brisbane rivers hit hits record levels over the next two days.

As panicked residents strip supermarket shelves bare, Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says people should stay calm.

"Stay calm but act wisely and if you're in doubt, evacuate to friends or evacuate, don't take any unnecessary risks," he said.

The Brisbane River is predicted to rise to 3 metres tonight, 4.5 metres tomorrow and is likely to peak higher than the 1974 floods that reached 5.45 metres.

Large parts of Brisbane are already affected by flooding. A number of shops in the CBD have been evacuated and the State Library has closed because of the extreme weather conditions.

A steady stream of debris is floating down the swollen Brisbane River, including boats ripped from their moorings by the force of the current, and a whole ferry pontoon.

Ipswich is also in danger, and Mayor Paul Pisasale says the city is preparing as best it can.

"If you think I'm panicking, yeah I am, but I want everyone to stay calm because we're going to resolve this together," he said.

The Bremer River at Ipswich is now expected to reach 22 metres tomorrow morning - 1.5 metres above the 1974 level.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who is flying to Brisbane tonight, says it will take many months for communities to recover from the devastating floods.

She says the Federal Government is doing all it can to help people affected by the flooding.

"We've already processed more than 10,000 claims and paid more than $13 million and this is just the start - there will be more payments and support for people in recovery and then all of the rebuilding to do."

Several major highways are cut as well as countless suburban roads.

Evacuation centres

An evacuation centre has been set up at the RNA showgrounds, but residents in the 80 affected suburbs are urged to stay with friends and family.

The Red Cross says it will be able to accommodate about 1,000 people.

Spokeswoman Julie Groome says they will provide a range of services during the flood crisis.

"People will be able to sleep here, shower, eat here," she said.

"We've got a TV here, we'll have as much information as we can for people.

"We've got St John here in case people have any medical or health concerns. Lifeline are going to be here and the Salvos are providing that catering for us."

In Ipswich, thousands of people are expected to fill four evacuation centres across the city.

Ms Bligh says Brisbane and Ipswich residents needed to band together to deal with the crisis.

"If you live on high ground in Brisbane now is the time to be reaching out to friends and offering help, and offering where necessary a bed for the night, over the coming two to three days," she said.

"For those who are living in some of the lower lying areas and the identified suburbs, now is the time to be making whatever preparations you can, and I would encourage you to be overly cautious.

"For those who are unlikely to be directly affected, I think the entire city of Brisbane, the Ipswich region and most of the south east, needs to prepare ourselves for enormous disruption we are anticipating."

A telephone hotline - 1300 993 191 - has been set up for people seeking information on friends and relatives caught up in the flooding disaster.

It has been all over the news even up here in Norway, and I must say, my thought are with all the affected Australians right now. I would never expect the Australia I knew from movies and tv-series as a kid, with dry deserts, forest fires, and orange sand 'everywhere' .could be affected by such a flood. ( I know now that it's a big diverse country, but that used to be my impression, George Miller may have had something to do with it)
We are used to quite a lot of rain and water up here, so we are better prepared if something like that would occur. On the other hand, 2010 was the coldest year in Norway since 1941, and still the average temperature of the world is rising, so things are happening. ( I won't say if it's man made or not, as we can't really be sure )

Yes well without going into a different subject too much, we have seen Europe blanketed in snow like it used to 20 or 30yrs ago.
The rain we have had here in Australia is what it used to be like 20 to 30 yrs ago.... (though flooding like this in the Brisbane area was last in 1974).

Some of the latest info I have come across (Non news outlet) has made me a little sick, but the short version is that there may or may not be around 50 bodies found somewhere in Grantham by police.

Joins on to the previous rumor I was hearing about a similar amount of people riding it out in a local school that, well, apparently isn't there anymore.

Don't take this as hard word, I hope all it is is just rumor, but fuck, this is bad...

Yes its a rumour, too many were running about.
Another rumour was the Wivenhoe Dam was cracking as well, these sorts of rumours doesnt help the situation at all.

Thankfully the flood waters are receding in Brisbane.
However Rockhampton still is flooded somewhat...

We now have flash flooding in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and even Tasmania!
