Another one !.....Post Apocalypse Hot Rod the DESERT RAT

Post by Barry Harker »

Hello guys, well heres another one I have been buiding.
this model uses the left over chassis I had from the 41 Willys Coupe. I decided I wanted to build a Hot rod out of it,
although not having many parts would mean more scratcah building again !
first the chassis was streched and then strenthend with extra cross members. the Tub was assemled from plastic card sheet and a Fuel tank added
to the Passenger Compartment and another underneath between the chassis rails. I did start to build a pick up bed on the back, however I was'nt
keen on the look so that came of and on went a frame over the Tub. This model is going to have a driver (taken from a 1/24 Spitfire Kit)
so the frame work just fits over his head ! "at least he's safe if he rolls it"
the wheels I had on at first looked to small so I bought 2 Toy Tractors and used those wheels, they add to the look of the car.
The engine Block is a Big Block Ford with a super charger and Scratchbuilt Headers and Air Scoop

a Qeustion on that............Can I have 3 exausts per header on a big block ford, or should it be 4 ? I know you can have 3 on small blocks,

well this is the model so far, Have some finer detail work to do on it yet so ill post more photos soon.

It really should be 4 per side on big block V-8's. It sort of has like a PA Tumbler(Batman Begins) feel to it. Awesome work as usual Barry.

Thanks for the Info Cassius, Wasnt sure about ford big blocks (Chevy big blocks are the popular motor over here !)
And until you mentioned it, I never thought about the TUMBLER. But yea with the double wheels at the back,
I see what you mean.

Cheers for the advice and comments.

All the best,

Barry.

No problem Barry. You doing any weapons load out on this one? Maybe a set of MG-42's, if you can find them in 1/24.

Hi Cassius, Yea this Ones going to carry a Duel Cannon on the Upper Frame Rail.

Here's the model so far.....................

The rear Frame is now Finished with Ammo Box's either side of the Centre post for the Cannon.
The Engine Now has the Proper Four Exaust Manifolds ! and here is the Radiator in the Grill Housing.

This Model is also going to have a Driver, taken from a 30 year old Airfix Spitfire kit I bought from a friend !
He's been chopped up a lot to get him in the right position. He will also be able to be removed from the model
as the steering wheel also detaches so I can photogragh the model with or with out the Driver inside the Car.

The model mocked up to see how it looks.

The Duel Cannon is Scratch built from Styrene strips. and will slot into the Post on the rear of the frame,
it can also be removed or replaced with another Weapon.

Love the car, Barry. But the engine is not a big block ford but a first-generation Chrysler Hemi. Besides the obvious Hemi heads, the Torqueflite tranny is a dead giveaway. Still, very toey. 8-)

THANK YOU ! :o

I Have finaly found out what that Bloody Engine is ! I have Hemi's and Chevys but No ford blocks in any of my models.
And didnt Recignise the Engine Block I had with the Willys kit "although now you mention it the Heads do give it away just diffrent Valve covers !"

and being an early block, thats why it looks so diffrent to the 426 Hemis i have. Plus being a Brit..................
Im so use to Chevy Blocks "very popular over here" it looked Alien to me.

Cheers Armourer :D

Glad I could help out. I'm not too up to speed on those 1st Gen Hemi's, so I can't tell whether it's a 354 or a 392. I can't afford the 2nd Gen 426's, so I stick with the Wedge's. I'm rebuilding a low-deck 383 to drop in a '69 Coronet sedan for the 2011 Wasteland Weekend(the car won't be finished by this year's event :( ). 2300 miles, one way, in a post-apocalypse tricked out vintage Dodge. by the time we get there, we'll be a bit tired and wired and in the perfect frame of mind for the weekend. Road-trip!!
