Honestly?

After seeing a pediatric Harrison Ford in the last Indiana Jones movie (almost made me realizing how old he is)good movie though,
A sad shadow of Sylvester Stallone in the drama Rocky 12(or was it 17?) and in the hysterically funny splatter movie Rambo,
A beyond Milf and Cougar Sigournet Weaver in Alien 4,
A CGi Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator Salvation,
not to mention the tired and old Mel Gibson and that other guy in Lethal Weapon 4,
Do you really want Mel to return to Mad MAX 4 , aren't we all really just happy he won't sign on ...

Yes.

Wanting to see a Max Movie without Mel Gibson is a thing I could never understand. It's really unbelievable to me.

Of course!

Notice all the movie franchises you mentioned were centered around one memorable character (with the exception of Terminator Salvation and Lethal Weapon movies with 'that other guy' as you said it yourself). Actors playing those characters are irreplaceable, they build those characters and the bond is so strong that breaking it creates a mere imitation of the movie itself.

Now look at Star Wars for example. It wasn't as strongly focused on one character as Mad Max is, but still the original trilogy was more or less about Luke Skywalker. The new trilogy forced new actors to play characters from the previous movies and those actors had to work hard to associate themselves with the characters they played to win over the audience over again. Hence a new trilogy. On a side note, It would be great to see new trilogy of Mad Max movies starting with Fury Road, since Mel probably won't be the lead role in it...

The only reason I'd be pissed off at Mel for being in Fury Road is if his acting was half assed, completely not caring about the role.

Tbh, I wholeheartedly agree, but I'm so afraid that he'll look like Harrison Ford or Sylvester did. Wish they had made Fury road 10-15 years ago :P
I really hope that if there is any chance that he'll do it ,(don't seem very plausible though) he'll be more like Clint Eastwood ;)

I think you mean 'geriatric', zykotech!

And Sigourney Weaver is still hot, you blasphemer!

I think Mel could still do Max in the next movie.

LOL, yep I meant geriatric :P
And Sigourney weaver was stil hot in Alien 3 ;) (I'm only 31 she's 29 years older than me, hell, even Winona Ryder is 7 years older than me :P and Charlize theron is 35. I wish they could get Megan Fox for Fury Road, she needs a 'cred' movie, and she's bad-ass)
If they do a 'Obi-wan Kenobi ' Style Max I think Mel might be right for ti, and with enough cgi, make-up and lighting even Marlon Brando could'a done it ;)

Of all the 1980s action stars, there are three roles I've always wanted to see given an older portrayal: Indiana Jones, Conan the Barbarian, and Mad Max.

Those are the heroes that just seemed best suited to being revisted in an older and wiser manner. For example, it wouldn't make a lot of sense to have an old Terminator. Rocky Balboa is limited by his profession, which makes any story set beyond his forties a real stretch. Axel Foley relies heavily on a youthful charm and attitude. As a Vietnam vet, John Rambo's timeline is kind've set in stone. etc. (And I realize most of those have already been done anyway.)

I also realize the timeline argument could be said of Indiana Jones, yet he was never a character that relied on physical strength or brute force. He frequently got by on his wits and blind luck as much as anything else. An older Indy is true to his roots as well, since a character like Allan Quaterman started out as an old adventurer near retirement. Ditto for Conan the Barbarian, who was first introduced to readers as an aging king of Aquilonia.

As for Max, he was a survivor, plain and simple. I can easily see him managing to stay alive for a few more decades, possibly living out some type of monastic existence.

So yeah, I'll be very disappointed if Mel doesn't return- although it won't surprise me either. For some reason, Mel's always seemed eager to make his age an issue. Unfortunately for him, it's an argument that no longer holds up. Not only is he the youngest of all the big 80s action stars, but he's also one of the last holdouts in terms of revisiting his roots. You can't really play the age card when older actors like Ford, Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Willis have already done it first.

And truthfully, I simply think an older Max represents a more intriguing idea than a younger one. I already know what the latter is like. But what would the character be like with a few decades of experience on him? I also know what a modern post-apocalyptic film looks like- one in which actors take their cues directly from Mel's portrayal of Max. (Which, realistically, is what any actor that replaces Mel would likely find himself doing as well.)

Btw, I'm aware that the likelihood of Mel returning at this point is little more than wishful thinking. It doesn't change the fact that I'd still prefer to see it happen.
