I went to the thrift stores and pawn shops today. I was looking for musical equipment, but looked at the guns at the one pawn shop that actually had some(another one also does, but they were on vacation, and thus closed). I also visited a gun store.
The pawn shop had 3 "tactical"(short with pistol grips) 12ga shotguns. One was a Mossberg that was $260. I think the other 2 were both Winchester or Remmington. One, I think was also over $200. the other was only $160, and was the shortest of the 3. I don't know how many rounds it could hold.
The gun store had a bunch of coach guns. They seemed overpriced, but I didn't ask if they were new or used.
What I was really curious about was 3 pistols, 2 .45's and a .40. They were made by a company called Hi-Point. They were each $169. Again, I didn't ask if they were new or used.
OT: Stay away from Libby's potted meat(bleahhh). Stick with Great Value(Wal Mart brand), which I assume tastes similar to the Armour version.

My own arsenal (At present)
A Mossberg 500 pump in 20 Gauge, an H&R Topper .410 and an H&R 949 Revolver (9 round .22 cal)
Working on getting 20Ga Slug barrels for both shotguns, and will add Choate Stocks - The "Mk-6" Shell holder for the Mossberg and "Survivor" for the H&R.
If I can land one at a decent enough price, I'll be getting a .22Lr barrel to fit the Topper as well.
Later on, I'll be applying for a Concealed Carry Permit (Because I can) so I'd like a small and concealable handgun and I'd like to have a lightweight, High powered Semi-Auto Rifle.
Still batting around ideas for these.

Were the stocks on the shotguns just pistol grips, or were they regular stocks with pistol grips. I'm not over fond of pistol grips on shot guns. The prices seem ok but aren't screaming deals on the shotguns. As far as the Hi-point's, they were probably new. I have heard mixed reviews of them. I think I would save my money and get something better. If I were to list all the guns I wanted, it would swamp the forum...lol What I really need is a good place to shoot.

The Hi Point pistols, though cheap, seem to shoot very well. We would sell the hell out of them. They're far too heavy for a comfortable carry piece but they are a dandy house or truck gun. Last year at the range I watched one fellow put about 300 rounds through a .45cal model as fast as he could load the magazine and fire them off. The gun didn't jam once. Hi Point used to be a joke but they've come a long way in the past few years. The guns are ugly and heavy but they run great. A really good deal for the money.
What do you have in mind for a carry piece Foxtrot? I'm still toting a 1911 everyday. And for your lightweight, high-powered semi-auto, might I suggest a Bulgarian AK-74 copy in 5.45x39mm. The Kalashnikov design needs no introduction for it's simplicity, ruggedness, and reliability and I've become a total convert to the 5.45 round. The Bulgarian's beat the Romanians in fit and finish. Every 74 clone I own will shoot right on par with my AR-15's and will continue to run in conditions that tie up the AR. The 5.45 shoots a lot flatter then the 7.62x39 too. The only drawback is that all 5.45 ammo is surplus at present and no US ammo manufacturer loads it. This means it is almost impossible to find a sporting load for hunting. But thats the way it was with the 7.62x39 20 years ago and now you can find commercial 7.62 at WalMart. So I'm sure someone will pick it up shortly. With all the 74's coming into the country there will be a market soon.

"...This means it is almost impossible to find a sporting load for hunting..."
What do you hunt with an machine gun? Fugitives?
Interesting thread and fascinating reading from a non gun owner, with delusions of one day firing a proper gun, let alone actually owning one.
One of my Brit mates over here was given a fully working Colt Navy revolver for his birthday. (think outlaw Joesy Wales) My mate's girlfriend bought it online and it was delivered, via courier, with a sack full of lead balls, wadding, black powder and the complete gun all in the same box!
I asked if she had to provide any identification or some other means of security.... She said she had to tick a box on the website to say she was over 18. Sheesh!!
Seems the French class these type of guns in the same catogory as an air pistol! So you don't actually need a license to own one. Duh!
Nice gun and he has fired it too, got 5 bullets in a 12inch target at 30ft. Incidently it fires balls as opposed to aerodynamic shaped bullets.

I too am often fascinated by the gun debate in America, coming from a non-gun owning perspective, hehe.
I am on a DeLorean forum also, and in their "off topic" section a rather heated debate was raging on Gun Control post-Virginia Tech. I was amazed that about 90% of people were arguing for more guns on the street, rather than less! But I suppose it's your country, so it's your prerogative whether to restrict the types of guns available to the public or not.
As for me, I kinda have an interest in Single Action Target Shooting, old west style. But I'm not that interested to go out and spend money on a gun safe and all that. I do shoot at work though (in the defence force), so that's enough for me.
I still don't know why people need to go out and buy the biggest badest automatic rifle you can get. Seems like overkill to me!

Re: Virginia Tech.
If anyone there had been carrying besides the evil piece of filth that did the shootings.. There'd be a bunch of people alive today that aren't.
Someone would have dropped the Bastard.
(I'd have no qualms about doing so, and I'd sleep no worse that night)
Re: Pistol for Concealed.
I'm thinking a small frame revolver in .357/.38 or several different calibers in Auto.
The Revolver would probably be the best idea for
Me, right
now.
(Budget and storage issues)
This is where being Mega Rich would come in handy..
I'd buy a bunch of different guns, try 'em out (At the range and Carrying) and pick out the one I like best.
(And leave the rest in the cabinet
"I'll take that Glock, the Taurus 605, a High Cap GI 1911, Five of those NAA Mini Master convertibles (They're Small), that S&W 627 and that Taurus 608."
lol
(And yes, I know a couple of those are in no way suited to Concealed carry)

Like the saying goes: "an armed society is a polite society."
My Artus Gladius collection is primarily a tad "medieval" in that it's mostly swords from around the world. I do have a couple of recurve bows with real, wooden arrows and a couple of .177 caliber pellet guns including an old Ben Franklin pump pistol that will put a pellet almost through a 2x4. I also have a .22 Marlin semi-auto rifle that's fun for practicing. The three guns I'm considering very seriously are as follows:
1858 New Army black powder revolver (just cause I think they're cool) $500.oo.
Bushmaster Patrolmans Carbine (short M-16/AR-15/XM177 looking piece) with laser sight, maglite, shoulder strap, Starlight Scope and pre-ban extra-capacity mags)...$1200.oo.
12ga double-barelled side-by-side shotgun (Cabela's has them from $250-$34,000).

The AK-74's available here are semi-auto only. So in most places it is legal to hunt with them. I don't know that I would hunt with one, but whatever floats your boat. Like the armourer mentioned, getting ammo might be a challenge.
Why we Americans like our guns. Lots of reasons, I like hunting, target shooting and collecting them. Do I need a high power semiauto rifle, eh probably not, but I sure want one! Just the same as wanting a BoB replica, I don't need one but would sure love to have one. So long as it is an option, I'll have the guns (and cars) I want and can afford.
As for mass shootings and the like, I can think of a couple that were stopped short or prevented all together by a responsible citizen with a gun. The school shooting in Pearl, Miss. was stopped by an assistant principle who retrieved his pistol from his car. There was another incident,at a community college I believe, but I can't remember the details off the top of my head.
Oh, and be careful with the black powder stuff, its addicting

I assume you've all heard of Representative Carolyn McCarthy's lovely little bill, H.R. 1022?
(Google the bill if you haven't)
In a recent interview, she made it abundantly clear that she knows Diddly about firearms and more importantly Hasn't even READ the Bill she's pushing at the house.
This woman has NO business whatsoever being a lawmaker!
Now, just to be straight, I fully admit that there are people who should be prevented from having firearms because of Criminal History, Mental disorder, whatever..
But let's do something to keep the guns out of THEIR hands.. not out of the hands of a poor rancher who needs his rifle to keep predators from eating his livestock or the law abiding guy who likes to put holes in paper targets down to the Shooting range or the guy who inherited his great grandfather's collection and keeps it locked safely in a gun safe.. or any other law abiding citizen who, by the Constitution has RIGHT to keep and bear Arms.
