Hi, I am new to the forum, and a big fan of Mad Max 1 & 2.

After a recent "threshold moment", I have decided that I am inspired to get my hands on one of the following cars, with the eventual dream of creating my own replica, and am hoping for some insight as to how difficult they are to find these days. I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, so sorry to be repetitive...

MAD MAX 1

1. Night Rider 1972 HQ LS Monaro

2. Interceptor 1973 Falcon XB GT coupe

MAD MAX 2

3. Red XA Falcon/Fairmont Coupe 1970-73 that gets wiped out by the truck

4. Ford Landau 1973-76 LTD Range with the unusual pipes out of the bonnet.

I look forward to any helpful information anyone can provide, and thanks in advance.

See you on the road scag......!!!

Cheers

I'm sure there'll be lots of opinions regarding this, and those cars are out there and available, but the days of finding a cheap Monaro or XB coupe are pretty much over.

You'd struggle to find a GT for less than $20,000, and there's really no need to use a GT, so you're better off finding a base model Coupe (Falcon 500, or Fairmont). Even GS models are expensive.

Best way to find a deal would be to read the Trading Post or Just Cars, or browse online. You might get lucky and find a bargain. You could try Ebay, but sometimes people try to profiteer by selling crap cars for lots of money.

Buying a base model... (non GT or GTS etc...) would be more then ideal.

But like Rick siad.... prices have skyrocketed in the past few years. Be prepared to wait and be patient when it come to finding "that" perfect car.

Also speak to as many people as you can when it comes to paint work , restorations and aquiring the body kits as several are available from different people.

It all comes down to what you want to achieve out of it..... There has been a few people who have made "madmax" inspired cars as well.....

Welcome aboard anyways mate!

Many thanks for the replies, it's a start, and for me it will be exciting hunting down the car/s. I am sure I will have to be patient.

Actually the car I am most interested to follow, is the red XA Falcon / Fairmont coupe from Mad Max 2, that end up being mashed by Max driving the truck. I did not see any replica's of that one on the Madmaxmovies site, although I am sure there are a few.

I am guessing it may be a little easier to track down one of these than the XB coupe? Although being from the same period I may be wrong.

Further to that point, I saw this car today on carpoint.com.au, an original 1973 FORD FALCON XA GT for AUD$250,000. Is this really what they are worth? If so, I will certainly have to follow the non GT route. Either way, its gonna be fun! Check the link below....

Hi Chaser,

That's the strange thing about cars, there worth what someone is willing to pay. I haven't clicked on the link you posted, I will in a minute.... but if it's a genuine matching numbers RPO83.... then yes he'll probably get his Qtr Mill on that one. If it's just a GT then I'd love to say "tell him he's dreaming", but you know he's probably not.

It also doesn't help that some guy just paid $686k for an XY GTHO phase III at auction late last year, this one public deal has pushed up the prices now of all Aussie Muscle cars...... you'll not see a genuine Phase III on offer for under half a million now. So as a knock on effect all old Aussie Muscle car prices have just gone up, as owners start to think, hey if he got $700k for a Phase III then my GT must be worth double what I thought etc.

Anyway, onto your question. It'll be no easier to find an XA than an XB or an XC for that matter, for the most part once you remove the front clip, guards & bonnet all 3 coupes are the same shell..... the only easily spotted difference is that the rear qtr light on the XC is horizontal not vertical.

Don't despair just yet, there are still cheap shells out there if your willing to look around for a while & also still some good cheap runners..... The main thing to remember is that your making a replica out of it (assuming that's what you do end up doing) so you don't have to be picky with colour, trim or spec when it comes to buying. It was only a few years ago that I found my 2nd coupe for $500, it was only a rolling shell but it had all the glass, chrome strips & it came with a full GS interior, a GT interior & a Landau interior.

Where abouts are you located, a lot of guys on here me included are often looking around for cars/bits & may be able to point you in the right direction.

Oh, one other thing... you'll find that getting some bits for the coupes is really getting tough as parts become as rare as rocking horse sh*te.

But, I have a mate who's restoring his 1972 HQ GTS Monaro & I can tell ya from the trouble he's had over the last 2 years..... we seem to have it easy... for the HQ coupes most of the bits seem to be made from pure unobtainium

Hi Daved

I am from Eastern Melbourne, however currently spend a lot of time in Beijing. So at the moment, all of my research is restricted purely to the internet. I will be back in Melbourne in mid June for a few weeks, which is when I can do some foot searching and hopefully that should be more fruitful.

I knew it was gonna be hard work ot find what I want at a cheap-ish price, but your story has given me hope that, although rare, it is still vaguely possible to find a bargain with patience. Assuming that XA, XB, and XC models, can be used for this purpose of making the replica/s I want, then that makes it a little easier. I just have the idea fixed in my head that I want to get the exact model in it's original form. Cost could make that difficult. As it will be an ongoing project for me, buying something like what you found for $500 would be ideal. Not much of a project if buying the finished product is it!

One assumption I have is that there maybe more chance finding something in country areas. Would you agree with this? How to go about that is another thing.

I would certainly appreciate any assistance you or any others could provide in pointing me towards something if it becomes available. I would have assumed such opportunities would be getting snapped up fast. For me at the moment my main objective is getting a handle on roughly what I should be paying, looking as many places as I can find online. Also putting the word out that I am in the market for one.

btw Was the buyer of the Phase III an Aussie, or someone from abroad?

Appreciate you help mate

YOur best bet would be to find stripper models i.e ones that came with a 6 banger and try and find a rough coupe for the 'Red XA' and a rough 71-76 Monaro coupe for the red Road Warrrior version and steer clear of the XB GT's as its not too wise to make a genuine GT into a Mad Max pursuit Special.try to find a decent looking XB coupe for that.

Well, the search is on in earnest :)

Would it be a waste of time checking car auctions such as fowles, or wreckers? I can't help but think there must be tons of people who have been there done that. Then again, I guess if you don't try you won't ever know, and might miss the golden opportunity that may arise......

So far I can clearly see the coupes are indeed very scarce.

Be sure and check the swap meets near you...car shows as well.. From memory there were a couple out at Balarat for sale, and saw a XC Cobra for sale at a cruise night at Knox City I went too (if you are around Melbourne that is)
