Volkswagen switchable Roots supercharger

Interesting article on a new "TSI" engine from volkswagen.

It uses a switchable roots supercharger AND a turbo. Apparently this setup has been used on truck engines in the past.

The supercharger runs an electromagnetic clutch and is in use for low revs, the turbo kicks in at higher revs.

Peak power of 125kW is about equal to the power of the Mazda3 SP23 (which has a 2.3-litre engine), and because of its dynamic TSI technology the Golf GT's engine has huge reserves of low end torque that would dwarf even a similarly sized diesel engine.

Some 200Nm of torque hits the skids at 1200rpm thanks to the roots-type supercharger that begins shunting more air into the combustion chamber barely after you've hit the throttle, and this rises to 240Nm @ 1750rpm-4500rpm, which is just staggering for a petrol engine of this size.

All this from a 1.4lt engine ?!?!?!?!?

Yes, but this is only because the turbo takes over, so the internals don't get abused like they would when you'd switch a supercharger on or off, especially under load.

I am indeed amazed by the power of this little engine, but there is but one problem I have with it: More and more mechanical and electronic parts. More to go wrong, and more expensive to fix.

True enough that its more complicated,

If Max's switchable set up existed in real life, I'd hate to think how complicated that would have been (I Saw a diagram the other day on this forum, explaining how it could work.

If I was max, I would have wanted to be pretty confident in my mechanical skills before heading in to the wasteland in the BoB

Using more recognizable terms, this 1.4L Golf engine is about 85 cubic inches and makes 167HP (125kw). That's just under 2HP per CI, which is impressive, but not really ground shaking for modern turbo technology.

For some reason everyone insists on making an on/off blower more complicated than it really needs to be. The ones I've designed do not need complicated electronics or any technology that wasn't available at the time the movie was made.[/div]
