Looks like The Road Warrior is coming to HD DVD and Blu-ray on May 8th with an new exclusive George Miller audio commentary.
Both HD DVD and Blu-ray editions will most likely be in 1080p High Definition with Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks recorded at 640 kilobytes per second and feature the Theatrical Trailer seen on the DVD edition.

Can High Def DVDs work on plain DVD players or do you need a specific DVD player ?

HD DVD or BLU RAY discs will only play on the new compatablible players.
BLU RAY has a superior picture with up 50Gb of image information stored on one disc.
Maxed out on HD DVD you only get 20Gb.
Stand Def SD DVD's contain anything between 4-8Gb on the Dual Layered discs.
Currently BLU RAY Players are around $1200-1500 AUD.
But in 2 weeks Playstaion 3 doubles as a BLU RAY player for about a grand.
My money's on BLU RAY. And RW the day it comes out.

I put money on a triple format release.
But can you imagine watching the film in 1080p.
It will be like being back in a cinema, 1982.

"BLU RAY has a superior picture with up 50Gb of image information stored on one disc. Maxed out on HD DVD you only get 20Gb."
ABSOLUTELY untrue. Blu-ray is indeed 50GB (dual layer) and 25 GB (single layer), but this does NOT mean the format delivers a superior picture. HD DVD is 30 GB (dual layer)(not 20) and 15 GB (single layer). The care and method of video encoding used makes ALL the difference in terms of image quality. On a far more consistent basis the image quality on HD DVD has been superior to that of Blu-ray (even with 50 GB discs). I own both and I'm more satisfied with HD DVD. HD DVD players are cheaper too, and overall are better performers.
Don't believe Sony's hype marketing of Blu-ray.
Warner, being format neutral, will release this on both formats (as stated above) and there's a 99.9% chance the HD DVD and Blu-ray editions will be 100% identical in terms of video and audio quality with the same extras.

Of course its all about the encoding.
Ever watched the Blu Ray encodes of Fanatstic Four and Superman. They are miles apart in terms of compression quality. I am assuming that one is single layer and the other is dual layer.
It's a competitive field - we are in early days so and I am backing the format that has has more space to move. Would you agree that the more space you have the less compression you need? Dual layer 50Gb vrs 30Gb. Too easy.
On top of that there will an additional 40 million Blu Ray players (in the form of PS3's) in US households in a couple of years.
Do we know how many studios are backing HD DVD vrs BLU RAY?

Look closely at the special features in the above images.
That RW disc's capacity is SO BIG that they actually squeeze the STARDARD DEFINITION 480p onto the same disc.
So you'll be paying for the HD but only able to watch the SD version on your conventional DVD player or home PC.
