Mainly some stunts and violence missing but with loads of extra footage probably off the cutting room floor added in to fill the gaps including different versions of the same scene in parts. Also with an American voice over instead of Harold Baigent.

Presuming that web page is selling DVDs, his prices don't look that bad. I paid around that to just cover the costs of getting a DVD copy of the US broadcast (and paid more than that for VHS copies of some of the other stuff he has on there). I transferred the Australian broadcast to DVD myself - would have happily paid someone the $20 for a finished job of that too, to have saved myself the time and trouble!

It's worth getting a copy of the TV version if you're a fan and haven't seen it. There are plenty of people around who would swap you a copy or sell one at cost, if you don't want to purchase from the page above. I'd still love to swap for older TV broadcasts of the films myself, if anyone has any lying around (preferably with any introductions, and commercials).

I have the lost version,The American over dubbing of the intro was comical,it sounded like the asshole was trying to psyche you up for a f**kin football game.

I've also aquired a lost version copy. (Thanks Adrian) I watched the intro whilst sniggering away to myself at just how bad and incomprehensible it is. BTW Adrian the disk paused and froze up the DVD player straight away, but no biggy as I have the one on the PC to use.

I mentioned to Adrian that I used to have a copy of the making of Thunderdome. Some French film unit went on location and shot loads of behind the scenes footage and even interviewed Mel and Tina, as well as Angry Anderson. They seemed to have arrived on set whilst they were filming the ending chase scene after Max takes back his car to provide cover for the plane's take off. I gave the video I recorded it from the TV onto to my brother years ago, several house moves later it's long gone (sorry Adrian, I tried.)

My copy of the lost version also has making of footage from MM2 as well as trailers etc So for the real fan who wants a little more I guess it's well worth trying to get a copy.

I really didn't mind the American dubbed Voice over, i thought his speech was way meaner and cooler than the Aus.

"He wandered out into the wasteland, and here he would learn - amid the dark wreckage, that the fire which burns in the heart of man, will endure.... hope survives"

When i was a kid and the LOST VERSION was the only version that i could watch, cause it had been taped off tv. those lines used to give me chills.

I've heard of the French behind the scenes version of Thunderdome before (someone promised me a copy years ago, which was paid for, and never turned up...)

The standard making of Thunderdome exists as a 22 minute version (30 mins with ads) and a 45 minute version (60 minutes with ads). From the copies I have, the short version was aired in Australia, and the long version was aired in the USA. I'd never been sure that the version shown in France wasn't just a copy of the long version anyway, and the description above seems to support that assumption. Would still be interested in seeing it if someone can turn up a copy, but it sounds like it will be the regular version, possibly with a French voice over or other alterations. But you never know.

Hi Peter, That French version was actually with French interviewers seen on camera on with the actors being interviewed on the set. There's no mistaking them for Yanks or otherwise. One of the interviewers, I remember, wore a black T shirt with a zip from neck to each shoulder giving him a sort of sad punky "I'm kin' hard me" look in the hope of him looking cool to the French viewing public (it failed, he looked like a dork) Sometimes during the one to one interviews the actors really didn't understand what was being asked due to misunderstanding what was said because of their accent.

So if you're saying that this was simply a French overdub of a US or Aussie making of docu, then emphaticaly no it wasn't. That's not to say they didn't borrow other footage they weren't able to shoot from other sources to pad theirs out though.

I saw it aired on TV in the UK not long after Thunderdome had hit to cinemas and found it informative, well at least different, in that I was seeing behind the scenes footage I hadn't obviously seen at the cinema. The film crew seemed to have arrived on set during the scene of the beginning of the chase scene when Aunty sets off after Max, when the cars and buggys drop off a steep slope down into a canyon. The stunt people were concerned that some of the vehicles could flip on the rough terrain, they cut this in with story board drawings of what they wanted the film to show. ONe car set off and took the plung as a test and it went fine, everyone was happy and so they went ahead with the shoot which you actually saw if memory serves correctly.

Mel got interviewed because I remember the Frencman asking him if he'd like to do a hit record, Mel seemed surprised and laughed at the idea. Mel was "scabbed up and dusty" with makeup as if he'd been about to shoot the jumping from the car scene at the very end.

Tina was interviewed too, minus the long main of hair down her back, at the time her hair seemed to be just a longish bob. I seem to recall the French crew actually filming from the side lines the view of Tina saying to Mel "Goodbye soldier" as she climbs onto her jet car. Mel was on the ground and had to scramble along it to get into shot as the perspective isn't at it seems on the film (don't ask me to explain with drawings please)

Angry Anderson was also interviewed in the bright sunshine, swatting flies, sporting his sleeve tattoos, the interviewer made reference to him being in the band Rose Tattoo, which, before that I hadn't known or even heard of (still haven't either)

Other scenes showed Aunties soldiers sitting along long tables enjoying lunch in the open air, some still wore thier armour. Norma Morecau (sp?) was interviewed and went on to say where she got her ideas for the soldiers costumes which was salvaged car parts such as the light they wore as epaulettes and the horse hair headcrests they wore.

It was pretty good, and if I had a copy of it still I'd send it but it's gone, sorry.

Could this mean I've seen something the great Mad Max oracle Peter Barton hasn't seen? LOL!
