Sneezy Cars and Prawn Aerials

Post by OverheadCam »

I often take a lot of embarrassing car fads with a grain of salt....we've seen the nightrider grille lights, those flouro under-car ground effect lights, CB aerials so big they make a car look like a "prawn", 5inch monster tacho's in Hyundai Excels and even those spinning hubcaps...

but this latest fad takes they cake!

These HiPo Ricer Rockets with pop-off valves that make the car sound like it's got a cold seem to be the Bee's Knees...but if you've only got a crap car and are too lame to either save for a better car..or just accept you've got a crap car....

what kids are doing now is mounting stereo speakers out in the wheel-well and playing A RECORDING OF A POP-OFF VALVE!!!!!!!...what's worse they're leaving the CD playing while sitting idling at the lights forcrisakes!....IT'S SO EMBARRASSSING TO WATCH...they don't even know how stupid they look!!!!!

has anyone seen anything worse than this.....I'm flabbergasted!.. (that's not a 'gay thing' is it?)

Yea i know there is apparently a "kit" to mount this ...er... speaker and recording to your car........

Probably just as bad is the massive rear spoilers which look like they come off the tail of a Boeing 737 fitted to either a Hyundai..... or and old 1970s mazda........

Or the 4 inch turbo muffler on the back of a rusty Barina.........

Or the home made spoiler kit which included massive wheel arch flares and and side skirts made from sheet metal and pop-rivetted to a LASER !!!

Or perhaps the really loud Bass speakers fitted to a army green coloured VK crumple door which made the boot lid buzz so bad with vibration..........

Serious folks... some of these.. idiots... have not got the brains to sit in a car let alone modify one....

I like when they proudly boast they spent $$$$ on buying a new "race" chip for their commodore... and when u ask them what else have then done to their engine... they look at you as if to say.. "man the chip does it all for me"...... or come up with some massive power gain like magic...

We are 100% snafu....

Haven't seen the artificial Pop-off Valves yet.

As for the Real pop-off Valves.. I got no problem with those. These are a REAL part and it does a real job.

Well, Sometimes. (I've seen 'em on Factory Turbo setups tweaked so loose that 1 PSI of boost will pop 'em. Causing the engine to run at about 50% of what it should run.)

I got no problem with Wings & Spoilers as long as they look good with the design of the car.. Oh Wait. Almost none do!

I know a guy in CA that was driving down the freeway on his way to work and some asshat in an Accord tries to race him.

Guy's late for work and pushing around 80 and he hears a kind of rattling noise beside him and looks over tosee the aluminum adjustable wing on the accord Rip off of the boot from the drag!

"BOOM Cars" - A good friend of mine does SPL Competitions and we get a kick out of watching the other cars in the lineups waiting for their turn at the Sound Drags..

You can tell the ones that actually KNOW something..

Their cars are Dead Silent while waiting in line.

Idiots, however, sit there in line Booming.

Showing tht they got no sound insulation, discharging their Caps & Batteries and heating up Amps & Voice Coils..

Last time I was assisting when he compteted, his car pulled a 174 DB as a best score and was quite quiet from the outside of the car. GOOD Sound insulation.

Anything you hear outside of the car is, as he put it, "Wheelspin" - Wasted power.

As for the "Prawn Aerials" If they actually serve a purpose.. I got no problem with these.

I need to get busy & get an antenna for my 2-meter rig one of these days.

I figured on a Half Wave, but we'll see.

(Half wave on a 2 meter radio is... anyone? No? okay, then, a 1 Meter long antenna.)

Also figuring on a collapsable Cubical Quad or J-Pole on an extendable mount for Stationary use as a longer range unit.

Thats when you roll up to them with an XR6 Turbo with a real valve on it, and show them that the noise needs some power behind it.

people still play "Fox and Hounds" on the CB's in country towns over here!

The Fox takes off with a 30min head start, then parks up in a street somewhere...then the "hounds" start off calling out to "Ya there Foxie?" when he replies "Yeah?" the hounds can tell if they're getting closer based on Fox's signal strength!!!...1st one to find him wins!

Sounds boring I know.....but when there's nuthin else to do...it sure passes the time!.....one guy in town used to have a F350 with a 44 Gal drum of fuel in the back...so he could fuel up all through the night!...you'd see 'em racing all over town in the wee small hours!

Ahh.. Transmitter hunts. The local HAM Club does a few of those each year.

I suppose whatever CB Clubs are out there do them too.

As I understand, a couple of the Hams are getting a bit too technologically advanced, with Dopplar sensors and some other fancy equipment.

Thought one of the lads used to have frightening success with an HT secured to the concave surface of a modified WOK.
