Anybody any thoughts about what happened to our man between the close of the first film and the start of the second?

Welcome to the boards!!

A lot happened to Max between those years, which depending on who you ask range from 2-6 years. He buried his wife and child, got his uniform fixed with the leg brace and shoulder pad, and survived the apocalypse. He also began to wander the Australian outback and made the necessary adjustments to his V8 Interceptor.

And he got Dog :)

I'm sure people will chime in with more, but that's a basic overview.

I don't think of the apocalypse that happened there in the classic sense of a nuclear exchange - more like a total disintegration of humanity - gradual to begin with - sudden at the end (the death of Jessie and the child).

Also I'm thinking that he didn't bury his wife and baby. I'm pretty sure he didn't go back to what was left of society - which then didn't seem to last much longer.

At the end of the first film he's on his own driving from a skirmish... we open on II with Max still behind the wheel hitting more trouble.

Between these two points I see him going from one episode of escalating violence to another and becoming more and more battered - emotionally and physically. He's passed through ruined towns, sought shelter and found only... a deserted fire station... a stray dog... a music box in a dead man's hand.

He's lost the fire of outright revenge and instead is reluctant to get involved unless he's directly threatened.

Where else has he been?

No Nuclear exchange?

You don't think http://www.madmaxmovies.com/making/madm ... ges/05.jpg was a Result of Rioting, do you?

And as for not burying Jessie & Sprog.. what about the two crosses we see in the opening Montage or MM1?

I figure Max snuck back into his hometown, got Medical attention, visited Jessie & Sprog's graves one last time, loaded up on food water & fuel & then took off into the outback.

Sometime after that, the actual War started.

Yeah, Miller said the events of MM1 took place a fortnight before the nuclear war, so I guess about 20 days.

For what it's worth, I agree with all of the above to one extent or another.

What we know as fact is vague: what we can surmise is that Max drove endlessly, looking for a place where he felt he could belong again. He found nothing. He encountered and defended many people, based on his basic, fundamental goodness and training. He faced and bested several "vermin." He scavenged, like the gangs he used to oppose. He kept to himself, sometimes going days without speaking a word to friend or foe. He grew tired of fighting. Tired of running. Tired of existing. But he continued because he was too good to be beaten, and maybe because he thought there was some purpose for him yet.

Max survived.

He developed a taste for Dinki Di dogfood. Once in a while I'll open a can of chili and eat it straight out (just 'cause I don't want to dirty a bowl and wait for the microwave--how's that for impatient?) and I'll always think of Max eating his Dinki Di out of the can.

I'm rambling. Sorry.
