OK, the top ten they listed were:

10: The Blues Brothers

9: Tucker: a Man and his dream

8: Back to the Future

7: Gone in 60 Seconds (the original)

6: Le Mans

5: Grand Prix

4: Christine

3: Mad Max

2: The Italian Job

1: Bullitt

OK, I agree whole-heartedly with the Blues Brothers, Le Mans and Grand Prix. Blues Borthers has some of the most fantastic (and fantastical) car chases in history, plus the story itself is pretty damn cool, and I love the Blues, so it's a win-win. Also, probably the only movie that can brag about being an action / car-chase movie, and a musical. Le Mans and Grand Prix are the quintessential car-guy movies. Plot is secondary, these films are all about the racing. And Le Mans showcases two of the most beautiful cars ever made: the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512T. Obviously, there is no questioning Mad Max, but to come third behind The Italian Job and Bullitt?

I disagree entirely with Back to the Future, Christine, and Tucker. Don't get me wrong, all are good films, but I don't consider any of them "car" films. I love Back to the Future, but the car is just one part of thousands of things that make the film cool. Not enough to be top-ten 'car films' Christine... well, I just don't like the Plymouth Fury enough to put it on the list. And Tucker? Well, a good movie, to be sure, but it's more a counter-culture story, man against the industry, 'big brother' if you will. The fact that he builds cars is secondary to the story. Hell, he could make soft drinks or guitars... the product just doesn't matter. So Tucker is out.

I'm not sold one way or the other on Bullitt, Italian Job, or Gone in 60 Seconds. See, in general, I love the car chase in Bullitt, but I just can't stand watching the rest of the film. It's just too damn boring. Gone in 60, while a true 'car nut' film, is a bad movie. Sure, there's lots of action, but it's a bad movie. Bad camera, no budget, no production values, and it show. Again, the action is good, but I just can't stand watching it. And the Italian job, again, a movie that would survive quite nicely without the car sequence. Not worthy of top-ten placement.

Here's my list.

10. Joy Ride. Have you seen it? Go see it.

9. Ronin. Not a 'car' movie per se, but the best car chase of the last twenty years. And the rest of the movie is good too.

8. The French Connection. There's lots of car culture in this film, and a great car chase too. You just have to love a guy named Popeye Doyle. Stay away from the sequel though.

7. The Blues Brothers.

6. Grand Prix.

5. The Cannonball Run. I loved this movie from the first time I watched it. It's a bit fluffy, but new weight has been added to it with the release of Brock Yates' book "Cannonball: the world's greatest outlaw road race." A great read. You quickly realize that all the gimmicks used in the film were based on actual events from the original Cannonball, c. 1971-79. And, Adrienne Barbeau in satin? Yowza.

4. Le Mans.

3. Vanishing Point. 'Nuff said.

2. Mad Max.

1. Mad Max 2 / The Road Warrior. Greatest car chase ever. Period.

Definately have to have Vanishing Point in there. It is now out on R1 DVD and I hope to see the 97 remake available someday too. It will probably be released do to Viggo's recent Rings fame. French Connection II is actually a pretty good flick, especially when compared to most of the films that get dumped on us these days. Frankenheimer knew how to do a decent film.

What about The Burglars? Just about the best car chase I've ever seen.
