Phase IV Machine

Post by Foxtrot X-Ray »

Just a quick question..

Has anyone ever tried to contact Phase IV machine in New Jersey and ask about their http://www.madmaxmovies.com/archives/ma ... aseiv.html?

According to the company's President, they built the heads & blower setup for the Pontiac 455 V-8 engine that was in the Black on Black. Image

Actually, I'm in the process of typing out a Snail-Mail letter asking for details on the motor. Which, as of the time that letter was published, was at Phase IV Engineering's facility.

I haven't found an E-mail addy for 'em yet..

I think a 455 would be more capable of handling the 600 horsepower they talked about. A 351 cleveland would not last long under those conditions.

Found a bit more info without mailing off my letter.

Supposedly the engine is no longer there, and they don't know where it is and have no pictures, documents or anything else to prove this engine existed.

My opinion: This person misrepresented the truth.

The car, to this day, still has the naturally aspirated 400 horsepower 351 Cleaveland V-8 engine that it rolled out of the factory with.

There was no 455 Pontiac ever installed under it's bonnet.

If they'd built a functioning On/Off gate for a 6/71 Supercharger, I would think that they would have marketted the design. To sit on such a device would be foolish.

Whuuuuuuu?cmoon man first off Poncho mills don't like high RPMs and second what makes you think a 351 Clevo couldn't hack 600 hp,keep in mind i've seen em in drag cars running 9's all motor also don't think that they just plunked on a blower and went vroom both engines would need to be totally built up for a blower.

If i'm not mistaken the basic block for the 750+ horsepower FORD Winston Cup Nascar engines is a 351C bored out to 360 c.i.d.

By the way, having lived in New Jersey for many years I can assure you that a automotive service/ machine company named " Phase IV Machine" never existed.

The company's there all right.

Look 'em up in the Phone book.

(I found 'em thru Whitepages.com)

Phase III was a high performance engine option on the earlier Falcons (GTHO). I've also found info that there was also a Phase IV engine option after that.

(Seeing a photo of said Phase IV 351 engine I'd say that it's definately NOT a DOHC, but a rocker type setup)

I stand corrected. Phase IV Machine does exist. BUT it is common knowledge that the limited budget of the first movie did all but justify the cost of an imported American powerplant for the BOB. After all they didn't even have enough money to film all the scenes.

Oops.. I lied. Image

The Phase IV was NOT Engine option but a Factory Prototype 351 Cleaveland Powered XA Sedan.

Apparantly there are four cars still surviving.

Here's a nice looking article on the http://www.fouronthefloor.com.au/garage/phase4.html
