Duran Duran - Bad Boys

Post by madmax_00uk »

I was watching a programe on Sky the other day, called 'The Pop Years' - 1984. And when the video to 'Bad Boys' came on by Duran Duran, a lot of people said that how they looked and dressed was like mad max!! They also said that Simon le Bon nearly drowned whilst making the video.

Simon le Bon's a hugh bike fan and a pretty good racer.

I remember reading somehwere he'd a big off at a race meeting a few years back, he 'high sided' or 'buckeroo'd' as they call it in Ireland and landed on the gas tank! the old family jewels where badly bruised but he got back on and finished the race ....bikers eh?

I remember this video. Even if the song wasn't fantastic, the clip rescued the whole thing! A lot of popbands from this era were really pulpy, but the clip often a true work of art!
I could probably make it on my own, but I like you kids.

Mad Max 2 had a massive influence on early 80's Pop Videos in the UK .

Duran Durans - Wild Boys. Simon Le Bon dressed in leather, 1 sleeve is cut. Dancers dressed like Mohawks.

Police - Syncronicity(?) video. I think Sting is dress in black leather like Max.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood use to enter the stage to the theme from MM2. They also had a song called 'Warriors' which had a chorus that included the words 'Warriors of the wasteland'.

What about "The Warrior" by Patty Smythe and scandal?

"Dancing With Myself" by Billy Idol had post-ap dressed characters.

What about Duran Duran's "Union of the Snake" video? I haven't seen that in ages, so I don't remember if the underground people are dressed in post-ap, or just skimpy clothes.

I am an 80's music video expert, so I'll try and think of more videos.

Yeah, it seemed like everybody was trying to do a little 'Road Warrior-style' in the 80's. I think the two biggest visual and maybe even thematic influences on movie/video/tv fashion in respect to science fiction/science fantasy were "Road Warrior" and "Bladerunner". "Teminator" was significant, too, but more so in the 90's, I think.

Don't forget,

"You Got Lucky Babe" by Tom Petty (I think that's the name of it)

Or the Phil Collins video where they are kicking around ideas for a video and one of the sequences has him dressed as Max and driving the tanker.

Even Rick Springfield had a video where he was wearing the now iconic single shoulder pad.

Just watched the Police video "Synchronicity II" which is the one you're talking about. While there is some wasteland type of theme there, it's not all that Max-ish. The guys in the band (well Sting and Andy Sommers anyway) are wearing a big colorful assortment of rags. The wind machines are on full blast with tons of garbage blowing around, and they're standing on big piles of TVs and other stuff. BTW, that album came out in '83 I think, which would put it after RW, but before MMBT.

I never knew that about Frankie Goes to Hollywood though. Very interesting.

As a producer of music videos in the eighties I can't tell yo how many time I heard the pitch ... "So it's after the apocolypse and the band are in a Mad Max wasteland .... blah blah blah".

It was one of those things that I just couldn't stomach. It was also symptomatic of the almost complete lack of imagination among the directors and A & R guys of the day. It was too easy.

In retrospect I'm glad I didn't attempt it ... the Addicted to Bass clip is terrific and I only wish I'd had the immagination to suggest MM1 when it was all MM2.

I have heard that there is another MM inspired clip in pre-production ... let's hope it pays hommage rather than taking the piss.
