'71 Challenger Tribute American Interceptor

Post by timdp »

Basics: Bought it as a 318/904 car in 1978. Mid '80s swapped the 318 for a new built 340 six pack with cam, TA headers and sway bars/727 w/shift kit, lowered it and cut the wheel wells to match the 2008-2017 Challenger wells ( ;) ). Wheels/tires bought at the same time are: 265/50R15 and 295/50R15 Radial TAs on 15x8 and 15x10 Cyclone II rims. Seats are from a 260Z. Replaced power steering with a manual box and replaced the AC unit with a standard heater box (somewhat regretting that now..). Also spun it on the freeway in the rain on bald 295 tires and crunched the quarter panel.

Plans are to build an American interceptor. Has not been driven in 20 years and wood rats had taken up residence for most of that time. Have spend a lot of time cleaning the cabin... Still have quite a few wires to repair/replace. Wheels will remain the same, just painted flat black. New tires will replace the 30+ year old tires, although 265/50R15 Radial TAs are no longer made, so I having to go with Hankook tires in that size.

Can't do a real blower because the compression is 10.5:1. I love Cranky Frank from Fury Road so am building a (fake) tunnel ram version of the intake turned up to 11 which will go onto a hole in a new RT hood. Picked up a 16" diameter freebie fiberglass water filter tank that will get cut up to provide the two gas tanks. Pieces will be mounted on top of the trunk along with other gear, because I need to trunk space for Wasteland gear transport. Have a flashy blue light ordered. Have the package tray wire extension shelf built. More as we go along...

As purchased 1978

After mid 1980's mods: 340 with six pack and cam, lowered, wheel wells opened up, quad large rectangular headlights added.

Current
Pics after cleaning out most of the rat shit. Then it was on to the wire wheel in the grinder, Rust Reformer primer, flat black paint, two layers of Peel and Seal, carpet underlay, carpet padding and a vinyl flooring, which was an original option on the Challenger. One layer of Peel and Seal and two 1/2" layers of styrofoam on the ceiling.

Here are a bunch of pics. Still LOTS of stuff to do...

Intake: Westinghouse electrical box, 5" semi truck exhaust pipes, Mopar tunnel ram top and two junk Rochester Quadrajet carbs from ebay.

Here are some size comparison pics taken with Bill Brown's interceptor. Challenger wheelbase is within 1" of the XB's

NICE! Did you get a pic of it with "combine" (the 4x4 Bullet Farm 73 Mach 1)?

Did not get pics with Erika's Mach 1 because its on a 4x4 chassis, so there did not seem to be much point in comparison pics, as opposed to pics with Bill's interceptor. Really wanted to compare the sizes of the two cars.

Comparison measurements:
Car 1971 Challenger Falcon XB
Length 191.3” 189.3"
Width 76.1” 74.8"
Height 50.9” 53.9”
Wheelbase 110” 111”

Did get a couple of pics with Hobbes' Mach 1 though. Its a full on drag car.

Bummer, that would have been cool to see. Maybe sandwiched between the Combine and Josh's GTO!
