Three questions about the trilogy

Post by Uncle Entity »

1- Has Mad Max (the character and the early draft of the MM1 screenplay) been invented and conceived in 1975? Two years before filming would start. This way, FURY ROAD marks the 40th anniversary of the character, right? Just wondering... 8-)

2- RW: after all this time, it still bugs me that the Police "tag" (MFP 4072) of Max has been "pinned" on the jacket in the wrong way, since his jacket is fictionally supposed to be the same from MM1, just modified. Right?

3- Thunderdome: is it me, or it seems like Max shortened his mane before working in Underworld, in order to check MasterBlaster? The mane seems to me a bit shorter than the beginning of the movie, when he first approached Bartertown.

Thanks for the answers.

Yes, yes, and yes (or it's just styled slightly differently to keep hair out of Mel's face) ... though I think you're getting to the point of possibly over-analysing things ;)

1- 1975!
2- IN-FICTION, how can we explain that?
3- I was talking about the hair in the back, not on the forefront...

1. 5 years before filming. Source: Fantastic Films, August 1982.

So yeah a little more than 40 years, more like 43.

1972 sounds off, because Miller was inspired by the gas crisis which broke out in 1973 - by his admission.

Keep in mind that the very first iteration of Mad Max was a documentary about race tracks in Australia, then it was turned into a contemporary piece about a cop terrorized by a biker gang.
From 1972 to 1977 the story was refined and turned into a dystopian sci-fi'esque movie inspired by the 1973 oil crisis, which was a direct result of a small budget for the movie. So if you want to look for the very origin of Max Rockatansky I would aim at 1972 easily, but then he was just a regular cop, not even sure if he was named Max Rockatansky then, but the character could've been there since they dropped the documentary approach really quick. Either way, 43, 42, tomato, tomato.

Yep, that's how it was. When Miller and Kennedy first wanted to make a feature length it was going to be about the general car culture and race tracks in Australia. From that it just turned into a story about a cop terrorized by a biker gang. I don't know I thought it was common knowledge but the reason Mad Max is set in dystopian future is because they couldn't make the 'contemporary' version of the movie in normal locations. It would be too expensive to shoot on busy streets, buildings full of extras, pay for permissions to film in regular places. So because of the slim budget they had to go into guerrilla filming mode and film in desolate locations, abandoned buildings, paid extras with beer, you know the score. In order to justify it on screen they modified the original script into 'dystopian' or 'a few years from now'. The 1973 oil crisis was used for that because it fascinated Miller how quickly people turned in on each other when there were fuel shortages in Australia at that time. The dystopian sci-fi setting also played really well with cartoonish violence of the movie. It really shows that the dystopian angle was built on top of what Mad Max originally was, it's not predominant, it's always in a passing - you hear about fuel shortages on the radio in the background, as if ad libbed, there's only one scene in particular where they steal fuel from a tanker, the MFP HQ is trashed and that's about as much focus on dystopia as you get with the movie. Everything else is pretty normal and contemporary for late 1970's.

1 - Looks like I was wrong, lol
2 - There may have been an incident when it was removed and re-attached, possibly but someone pulling it off him, and he just re-attached it any old how
3 - Well, for me I know if I style my hair differently it can appear a different length, but more likely is that the scenes were filmed a few months apart and a hair dresser didn't get a decent continuity shot of the previous scene ... but I wanted to come up with other explanations!

It's not a continuity error by sure. His hair look shorter, maybe Max just found a barber in Bartertown after years before picking his job in Underworld.

I like your #2.
