Cant help feeling it could have been better somehow especially considering just how visceral the opening chase with the buzzards was, I don't know, Im probably alone but for me, something was missing. Certainly didn't think it was as good as MM2's tanker chase.
I really do like the pole cats and the fighting on top of the warrig but theres nothing to match that moment in MM2 when max fires that shotgun through the windscreen or the guy gets dragged under the tanker etc. maybe its the watered down violence. I just expected better somehow. it loses me once they get to the canyon, too many cg shots and I still prefer the end collision between max and humungus over the war rig roll which every time I look at it looks like a miniature even if its not.
I just expected the mother of all chase scenes and it didn't feel like it for me, there was also a load of interesting vehicles that just seemed to tag along for the ride without featuring much
Ill put my tin hat on and await for the incoming...
Anyone else dissapointed in Fury Road's final chase??
Re: Anyone else dissapointed in Fury Road's final chase??
I sort of agree, but I know it was edited right down for pacing. Margaret Sixel recently confirmed in an interview that the Claw Cars scene was originally a lot more elaborate and was cut heavily. From what I've heard, this would have included Claw Car #5 (the Willys Jeep) being crushed under the wheels of the War Rig.

To me it didn't beat the final chase in MM2, not by a long shot. Two things: there's that much you can crank up the movie before it becomes tiresome to watch and Fury Road was 3 crescendos with breathers in between. By the time we get to the final chase it feels like if we got an even more intense chase it would be a complete assault on our senses, after 2 long action sequences already. The second thing is that Margaret had to edit down this movie quite heavily. Difficult task because it didn't allow for cutting out whole sequences so instead we got a lot of everything in small doses. There was just too much happening for my liking.
In MM2 most important action beats took their time and weren't rushed. In FR it felt like everything was. I think that the final chase suffered from it.
I'm hoping one day we will see the longer and uncut version of Fury Road that goes at a somewhat normal pace, not with missing frames, sped up footage, split second editing that was done to fit it all into 120 minutes. Hell, a 3 hour cut of that movie would be a blast.

I love the final chase and i think it's wonderfully eidted however with mad Max i just want more and more so the longer the better. I would love if they released a cut that was over two hours. The credits begin at 1 hour 53 minutes in, another 20 minutes or so of actual movie would have been awesome.
Re: Anyone else dissapointed in Fury Road's final chase??
I also found the final chase tiresome. This was partly down to the sheer amount of stuff happening but also how silly it got. Any emotional investment I had at this point just went out the window. I can understand wanting to make it bigger and better but, given the pace of the film up to that point, they actually could have done the complete opposite and pulled the cord so everyone was run ragged. The intensity could have come from focus rather than spectacle. That's why the RoadWarrior final chase works so well, everyone is desperate, everyone is using their last moves, everyone is mortal.

Re: Anyone else dissapointed in Fury Road's final chase??
But everyone is mortal in the final Fury Road chase, evidenced by all the people who die during it

Re: Anyone else dissapointed in Fury Road's final chase??
What MWFV8 meant is that the stakes are high in RW, in Fury Road we get used to the mayhem over the span of 2 hours that it doesn't have the same impact. It's very evident at the end of the chase where Vuvalini are nonchalantly thrown off the Rig, War Boys throw themselves at Max and fall under the wheels, some imperator falls off the Gigahorse and under the wheel like it ain't no biggie, all the while Doof keeps rocking on and Door Wagon's driver is crazed out and rams the car with this insane face he makes. It's not very focused at all, more like mayhem and pointless deaths. In RW the stakes were high and each action was calculated. You think some bad guys would pull up to the War Rig to help some War Boy that's hanging off the side like Bearclaw Mohawker did? Hell no, they'd let him fall and go under the wheels. Or when Wez rammed the Tanker and realized he bit off more than he could chew, the Cobra truck peeled off and didn't try any of those stupid stunts again.
The only dumbass in Road Warrior that got himself killed for no reason was Luke that got pulled in under the tanker. There's a whole bunch of people that die like this in Fur Road.

No. It was perfect, perfect in every way.
Re: Anyone else dissapointed in Fury Road's final chase??
Good points well put but Fury Road is such a different beast in this regard. Life is worth even less, ESPECIALLY the war boys. They are the very definition of expendable so im not surprised none of the characters seemed bothered by their plentiful demise in the finale.Taipan wrote:What MWFV8 meant is that the stakes are high in RW, in Fury Road we get used to the mayhem over the span of 2 hours that it doesn't have the same impact. Some of the other issues you mention i think might be more down to having to edit down a huge amount of footage from a much larger sequence for pacing and time reasons. There is so much crammed into those 18 minutes or however long it is and Margaret said she had to shave everything down to the bare minimum. With so many characters to focus on, perhaps its inevitable it might seem like too much happening at the same time.
The only time i feel it slightly bugs me is after Max lands on the doof wagon, we cut away to Furiosa for a little chunk and when we cut back to Max he's kind of exactly where he was after landing on the doof wagon, as if he'd been doing nothing but just hanging there waiting for the action to cut back to him. That is my only real editing critique but kudos to the editing overall as i truly think Margaret Sixel did a superlative job.
