Glory and her mom: MM video gam vs. MM prequel comic

Post by flightsuit »

Don't know if this has been discussed already, but I'm currently playing the Mad Max game, and enjoying the heck out of it, but the puzzling thing is I just met Glory and her mom, and the circumstance was completely different from what's in the prequel comic.

What's more, we learn that, in the video game, Glory's mom is Miss Giddy's daughter! And a former breeder at the Citadel who failed to produce male offspring!

The prequel comic doesn't necessarily say these things aren't true of Glory and her mom, but it definitely has Max meeting them in an entirely different location, under very different circumstances, than what's shown in the game.

I know the game can't be canonical, but there was clearly a huge amount of data being shared between the film production and the game's developers, so it's almost tantamount to canon. And what this tells us is that George Miller might not care nearly as much about canon as we'd like him to. At the very least, he probably had no problem whatsoever with the comic book and the game completely contradicting each other.

I think neither the comic nor the game are canon, because Miller just doesn't give a fuck. And I can't necessarily fault him for that. This is his vision, and Fury Road was a masterpiece, and I will just keep on being willing to meet him wherever he wants to take us.

I'm currently playing the game too and finding many tie-ins between the game and Fury Road. A similar look and feel, including costumes and weaponry, as well as terminology like War Boy and Gas Town. And I'm only in the early stages of the game.

I think it's pretty obvious that George Miller gave the game developers a certain amount of information, including visuals, from Fury Road well ahead of the movie's release date in May this year, as there is no way they could have incorporated these elements unless in the early stages of development of the game.

And if that is the case, I think it's a small miracle more of the plot and/or visuals of the game weren't leaked a long time ago. Although it would have been pretty obvious where the leak had come from.

Indeed, back when we began to hear about this game over a year ago, there was so little known about the game, and I had gotten the impression that it might have very little to do with the movie. Now that I'm playing it, I feel it's definitely set in the same universe as Fury Road, and it does a great job of fleshing out what the rest of the Fury Road world might have looked like if we'd gotten to see it.

The Glory in the prequel comics isn't the same girl shown in the game: the two girls only share the same name. In a world like the Mad Max universe, made of violence and despair, those names must be pretty common.

That's kind of hard to swallow, in my opinion. I think they're the same character, but with different stories.

Although, heck, if Bruce Spence can be two different characters who both just happen to be eccentric pilots, I suppose anything's possible.

My theory is that Miller just gave a bit of info and details to game's developers and he then pissed off to make the movie. You can totally forgive him that because after failed Broken Hill launch he also lost the Furiosa anime so Fury Road was really the main focus eventhough the game was on the table since the beginning, but definitely on the backburner for Miller regardless.

And it totally makes sense if you look at it that way - Miller gave the production team some details about Glory's story, probably a ton of concept designs and vehicle images from Fury Road, hell he maybe even showed them early test screening of Fury Road and maybe that's what gave them the idea that Max had a daughter in Fury Road (surely that's what a lot of people thought after test screenings).

So Glory's plot is altered, vehicles altered, everything's slightly off and interpreted in its own way.

A Mad Max game had been in the works for years but most companies had to drop it since Fury Road was being delayed again and again. The people behind the comics and game would have both gotten separate information and obviously would have never collaborated together. The teaser trailer for the Mad Max game came out

For both the comics and game George gave a limited amount of information out and ultimately let them tell their own story, hence why a lot of the parts don't make sense or add up because originally it was meant to be a direct sequel to Thunderdome with Mel Gibson(Its all in the Art of Mad Max and early concept art). Over the years George changed up the story and world so much that he doesn't even know himself wether its a sequel or reboot, the only definite things he has said are its 50 years after the apocalypse and its a return to the Max's world.

He seemed to give away very little info to game devs only. The comic books are written by him and his writers and are an integral part of this gigantic world he created for Fury Road. How big that world is... well, it spawned comic books (which btw are not throwaway last minute additions - those stories were created years ago with some additions of the actors playing respective roles), Furiosa's anime, The Wasteland, one more sequel and of course Fury Road. It's all by the same folks and comic books are part of it.

Perhaps this explains the game developer's early comments about working with a lot of imagineering on their part. At the time we took them as referring to the existing Mad Max universe, hence us freaking out over Max's original American accent.

Part of the issue also is project development can drag for years and then suddenly all of it needs to come together and go through multiple drafts through armies of people all over the world. It may be that the developers were put under too much strain, that Miller just couldn't oversee everything, the game took lower priority with continuity checking, or an innocent error here and there. It's not like games can be changed really easily either, especially not compared to rushing out comic books if needed.

I'd say the game does a great job of capturing Fury Road's look and feel, though. It's very consistent with the latest film, in that regard. And I'm quite intrigued by the fact that much of the game seems to be taking place in the bed of a dried-up sea, complete with multiple shipwrecks repurposed as people's dwellings and fortresses. That aspect of it really removes any doubt regarding Max's "You could ride for 130 days and never get anywhere" line in FR.

(I know that's not an exact quote)

And now that I think about it, the whole controversy over whether the film was still set in Australia? Heck, for all we know, maybe FR is itself taking place in a dried-up sea bed several miles from an Australian shore?

Probably not, as there is that antenna tower the Vuvalini had as a landmark, and the tree Max an company encountered.
