MMBT - What difference an opening montage & chase scene??

Post by scfc68 »

Just musing how different Thunderdome COULD have been with a more high impact start??

How about if we had a MM2 style montage referencing the final events of MM1 and the key scenes of MM2 maybe with some narration?? Maybe even new scenes that filled the 15 year gap?? And then the film lead us into a bonafide chase scene; ok no intererceptor but some similar style muscle car with Max behind the wheel pursued by Aunty's minions?? HAS TO BE BETTER THAN A WAGON PULLED BY CAMELS.......

And maybe a good extra 5 mins to the end chase scene, with more than the one highlight where Max rams the vehicle on to the track in front of the load train and that explodes. Was that really the best that could be done?? Hell, maybe some characters might actually die??

Perhaps even a middle shorter chase scene instead of the ridiculous bungee jumping

I find it so frustrating when this film actually has the best cinematography, editing, costume design and vehcle design so far but not the setpieces to go with it :|

MM2 has 4 x clear chase scenes, 5 if you count the pursuit of the doomed convoy that Wez butchers and obviously car action in the montage, even MM1 with it's mini budget has 2 x at start and finish and some bike action/violence inbetween.

I really hope people that check out Fury Road and like it don't start at MMBT :( God that film annoys me, it's brimming with technical achievement and glorious visuals but it just sooooo betrays the very world that birthed it. It's very low on any action full stop with a seriously low body count.

Imagine a Star Wars movie with such a lack of 'Star Wars', or LOTR with hardly any battles!

Anyone up to compiling a fanmade montage, B&W style that would grace Thunderdome?? - Would love to see one :D

I think the opening of BTTD is trying to make it clear that there is no gasoline anymore, that the story is entering a new world even more resource poor than the first two movies.

Other than that, I totally agree that the omission of a high impact chase was very out of whack. It would have been great to see that F150 rig or the Lone Wolf tearing over the dunes pursued by marauders. Although I'm not sure how technically feasible that would have been at the time.

I wonder why George Miller decided to have the 3rd set after such a long period of time after MM2.

I think it was set so far in the future to tie it in with the tribe of kids that never saw real civilization. 15-18 years after RW is enough for a tribe of semi-feral kids to develop.

BTD was a definite disappointment but had some shining moments. I'd grade it overall a 7 or 8.

I liked the audition fight scene and the creativity of Thunderdome (heck, it created a iconic reference). Mel executed Max to perfection once again though and carried the film. He is just a perfect Max. The role was made for him IMO.

I totally agree that it was a mistake placing it so far into the future and the lack of driving fight scenes was a real missed opportunity. Even the one chase we do get lacked creativity.

It had other real problems - I found Auntie a disappointing political villain who "lets" Max live at the end, which I hated the ending to the film; and the gyro captain was confusing and unresolved in my eyes so there is a real continuity problem with the film (I can see it both ways that he is or is not the same character). The lost kids were a nuisance, the Captain Walker was just too convenient, etc.

I would have been happier with a film that takes place closer to RW, with car chases, driving fights, emotion, great soundtrack and stunts.

I'm still puzzled why there was no film made from 1987 until now. I know that there were difficulties here and there, lost interest, etc. but with an aging Mel they really missed an opportunity to make a few more in the 1990s.

Instead, he went on to make some duds like Bird on Wire... :o
