Fame:Will the original trilogy be overshadowed by Fury Road?

Post by CriticAndProud »

I am rewording my post, as people misunderstood me ( I can see why, I worded it really badly )

As a fairly young fan, not many people I know, have any clue what Mad Max is. A couple of people know there is a movie called Mad Max, some might even know it has Mel Gibson in it, but they are very rare in my social groups.

I am aware it definitely has tens of thousands of fans (at least) world wide, but is that enough to not be overshadowed by Fury Road ?

Ah stupid question really... younger generation? Thats probably your answer there.
If you knew about madmax you wouldnt be asking it.

The fact is that madmax is known worldwide, but not only that just look at the amount of replicas and where these cars are located around the world.
Australia (obviously), NZ, USA, Canada, UK, Japan, Austria, Germany and one need only look at the yellow MFP paint jobs which have been applied to a number of different cars all over the world because they are fans who cant afford to import an XB Falcon.

On the flip side of what i said about the 20 somethings age group, whenever my car is seen in public, i have kids as young as 5 who recognise my car as "maxs" interceptor.
Most aussies know madmax as the movie that shot mel gibson into fame.

My cousins who are from Italy visited me a few yrs ago (one lives in Greenland) and both recognised my car and told me it was very popular in italy.

I think the amount of press noise about Fury Road says it all, it's very famous. Little homages and nods toward the franchise still pop up in contemporary, youth orientated media.

That said, a lot of the audience the new movie will be targeted at won't be that familiar with it.

Correct.. a whole new generation to target.

As an other example of just how popular the movie is, about 3yrs ago I drove to Rockhampton (about 700km away) in my replica for a car show.
Given the fact that I am not located in Victoria (were MM1 was filmed) it was a pleasent surprise to hear nearly the whole trip there and back on the UHF the truckies etc all screaming mad max quotes from the movie!
I also had back packer tourists in those cheap and nasty vans they hire/ buy waving at me like mad.

On one trip to a car show out to a small country town called Charters Towers, i encounted 4 young males sitting on the back of a ute (it was 8am and cold) at the entrance to the local dirt bike club track. they were there obviously watching all the classic muscle cars coming to town for the show. These guy were jumping up and down screaming knight rider wooo!!!! at me.

I get thumbs up from Police occasionally.

While at work recently (at the airforce base) I passed a minibus full of US Marines heading out. Several of them were pointing at me and giving the thumbs up.

Despite my age I am definitely a Mad Max fan (in fact I watch a MM movie at least 3 times a week !), I knew it was famous, this topic was more to ease my feelings that Fury Road will drive the original trilogy into obscurity, by confirming if it was really famous, enough to not be overshadowed by Fury Road.

I think that the original trilogy will remain famous after fury road, maybe even become more famous because of it !!!!

The vast majority of people don't go looking for the original of anything. They don't really care where it came from, just what is here and now.

That is quite possible. That is definitely true of 007 (shame, I love all Bond Movies).

Bond is an excellent example. Very few modern day Bond fans even know there were TWO versions of Casino Royale prior to the modern one, much less have seen them. Given that they would not like them, maybe it's better that way.

This is the thing though:

You live in Australia. Mad Max is most definitely an Australian movie. It's roots are Australian, the only place to get the cars is in Australia, it's a franchise thats Australian as the Yankees are New York City. I would be surprised if there is a single person living in Australia that has never heard of Mad Max.

In America, at least now, our culture has a little harder time embracing a film franchise. Movies that star Kevin James get top of the charts, where even better ones are quickly forgotten. Hell you cant see a movie with out some twat or group of them disrupting it (that may be something there, but here it's a national past time). Even with occasional nods and references in our culture to mad max, I dont see it being a very popular franchise and people have any idea where the hell a leather clad foot ball shoulder pad wearing theme came from. A "popular movie" here in America, rarely lasts very much after it's taken out of the theater anymore.

The newer generations going to movies are absolute morons. So. It's totally different.

I did mention in my orginal post that replicas are located in several countries.
MadMax has a cult following in several nations.

My cousins are italian and both of them knew right away what my car was when they visited.

Tourists recognise my car where ever i go (non aussies)

The US Marines on the RAAF base recognised my car when i drove it on the base.

During the madmax reunion in 2008 at Little River a group of Japanese tourists (2 carloads) just happened to be passing through town and said they had just come from Broken Hill to see the MM2 sites.
