The movie works perfectly for me, it's my all time favorite film! I was just under the impression that Max wasn't going to be in the sequel at all, that it will JUST be about Furiosa, which I don't want.

Emperor's new clothes. Everyone I've asked or seen the movie with, including my wife and son (who was named after Max 15 years before he was born) have had the same two criticisms... And not the criticisms I expected from this sequel (until I saw who was cast). Tom Hardy could have excelled. This could have been better than Road Warrior.
When I saw the previews I was mesmerized... Until Theron's over-the-top raging at the desert sky scene. It was at that point I suspected the direction the film would take. I hoped it wouldn't, but it did. I wanted it to be as good as the first two for my son. Believe me, had it been he would have said so. He was looking forward to it even more than I was, and had no preconceptions about Theron's role in the film.

Although I thought Furiousa's raging was the only powerful bit of the trailer myself.
So at the end you're critizising Furiosas desert rage scene ? But that alone doesn't put Max into a side character.
I think Emperor's new clothes hits the point. But in a bad way.
Even before the film started in May you always can hear the same old phrases and the whiners
keep repeating them because there's nothing new and profound they can bring to the table:
1. No Mel - No Max
2. Max is not the main character - you should call this 'Mad Furiosa'
3. Yes, the movie is good but it has no plot (...)
Hell, I had many worries about the film, especially about Tom Hardy as the new Max, but after I saw Fury Road I never felt Max was only a side character in this.
The whole movie is told from his perspective. He's the narrator from the beginning and for the first time in the Mad Max franchise his madness is shown. You can see
his haunting demons, you are able to witness his 'precognition', during the chase he killed the Rock Riders chief and the Bullet Farmer, was responsible for the
dead of the People Eater, he was fighting his ass off on the War Rig, fighting the Doof Warrior (I repeat: the Doof Warrior!!), rescued Furiosas life and not to forget
Max was literally the turning point of the whole story.
Ironically the biggest problem of Fury Road is it has to many highlights and people seem to forget all these facts about Max.
If you keep hearing the same "whiny phrases" over and over perhaps, just perhaps they are on the mark.
Personally I didn't need to see Mel. I had high hopes for Hardy - seemed well cast. Nor was I criticizing Theron's rage at the sky scene, per Se. I was saying it was a clear indication of the direction the film would take. A muzzled Hardy and Theron in the spotlight, which was as I suspected it would be when I heard she was cast.
For those who wanted to see a Furiosa spinoff movie I'm sure they enjoyed it, but even if it had been billed as such I'd still have been disappointed for other reasons. Surprisingly the main reason was the nonstop action.
Still, I'd rate it higher than Romperdome... and I'll probably buy the BluRay, so they're still getting my money. Just wished for more... or less.
Edit: Just hit Wally World for some lunch groceries and picked up the BluRay.
