But seriously, Mel has been pretty much training his whole life to take the helm after George retires. And since he DESPERATELY needs that (directing) comeback, what better place to come back to than Max?
And there's absolutely zero reasons not to give him that opportunity, apart from the "Who rule Bartertown!?" grudge he has with the industry execs.
As well as the majority public's perception hasn't really changed of him of being a drunk, angry, racist, anti-semite bigot. So no I doubt Warner Bros. would trust and throw hundreds of millions of dollars with Gibson's name anywhere attached.

i'm open to it. it hasnt been too hard to accept hardy as max.

using george lucas as an example: everything that was great about starwars wasnt his idea. the force awakens is entirely out of his hands; and people like it. which is why he hates it. we've seen what movies with 100% his content can do and they pretty much ruined star wars for most people. frankly, whatever lucas thinks about star wars means nothing to me; he can thank phantom menace for that; and i am really glad he cant shit all over something that was once good anymore and hold everything to it in a tight fist so nothing new can be done. i may not have rushed out to see force awakens, but i'll see rogue squad or whatever it's called closer to it's release.

for miller, it looks like he was welcome to other ideas while working on (at least) the max movies, and they all were really good. i believe he sees the potential of being in more people's hands and telling the story of max long after he's gone. this is a director that is doing things right.

The only thing that sets him apart from the rest of Hollywood is he hasn't been caught having sex with little boys.

Mel recently completed filming of the WW2 flick Hacksaw Ridge. It doesn't appear like he's as desperate as people who cling to the past seem to believe.

Not sure what this is all about.
Australian director of the snubbed “Mad Max: Fury Road” George Miller: “I won’t make more ‘Mad Max’ movies. ‘Fury Road’ with Charlize Theron, Zoë Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Riley Keough was forever getting completed. If you finish one in a year, it’s considered a leap of faith. Start, stop, start again.

“I’ve shot in Australia in a field of wild flowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever. We had to wait 18 months and every return to the US was 27 hours. Those ‘Mad Maxes’ take forever. I won’t do those anymore.”

The article is messy and all over the place. I wouldn't take anything it says serious.

So others get shot in Namibia again - Fury Road showed next to nothing of it's natural wastelandish terrain, so there's plenty to explore :)

As for Miller as director - I would expect him to choose a replacement who has an artistic vision of their own, he's never seemed interested in repeating himself and appears to value deeper thought to things. Also, Fury Road was a massive collaboration - hopefully the creative team who made it happen will want to work on interesting and innovative future Max films too.

Part of what made MM1 great was that it didn't stick to a formula, after all - and that was a budget film made by a green director!

Wait for a more verified source.

Not to mention one could read that as George saying he won't make any of "those" Mad Maxes meaning in Australia given the weather and delay he experience before going to Namibia.

I don't want another MAD MAX film without Miller directing, look what happened to the JURASSIC PARK franchise after Spielberg left. :(

Honestly, that's the only way I can interpret it. The next Mad Max movie will be a much smoother ride. He's basically saying that if it's anything like his Fury Road ordeal, forget it. Understandable.
