Mad Max 1 is like seeing Motorhead in a small club in 1986 blasting Orgasmatron after a local punk band opens. It is fast, loud, heavy, and raw and kicks your ASS!

MM2 is like Metallica opening for Ozzy Osbourne in 1986 still fast and raw but a little more ambitious.

Thunderdome is like a Judas Priest show, full of big budget pyrotechnics, still kick ass, full of denim and leather, but a little more melodic.

Fury Road is like seeing Slayer perform Reign in Blood at an all day thrash fest following Gwar!!


the evolution of the three MM movies almost exactly mirrors that of Metallica's first 3-4 albums from undergrond cult status to arena headliner during almost the same time frame.

Back in the 80's the most important movies to punk/metal culture were A Clockwork Orange and MM 1 and 2, along with Repo Man. At the local T-Shirt store is was not uncommon to see Max on display between Sid Viscous and Vic Rattlehead.

I recall reading somewhere that one of the early working titles for MM1 was Heavy Metal.

Interesting made me think of that Heavy Metal magazine and animated movie from around the time. Looked it up, movie was 1981 and magazine started in 1977. Not that they are related, although Miller was supposedly into comics info spread much slower back then so probably didn't know about it. I wonder if that would have changed the name of that animated movie though.

The Film was released in April '79 and Mad Max first commenced shooting on Monday, October 24th, 1977.

The script no doubt existed for a year or two before shooting. So it's quite possible. Possible.

I have a vague memory of it being in an interview with George Miller that was filmed where I worked. Maybe.

Hell yeah, absolutely! I'd always thought this was pretty common knowledge and huge part of their appeal. The supercharged, fast-paced action, the leather n spikes fashion, the corrupt government/apocalyptic setting and themes, the hotrod/gearhead/motorcycle subcultures were all very in tune with burgeoning, anarchic punk/metal underground of the time. I was coming of age when RW/MMBT came out and remember the huge impact these films had on us and our youth cultures like skateboarding, surfing, musicians and music videos ect... Mad Max 1 has always seemed very heavy metal, the Nightrider even quotes AC/DC's "Rocker", but Road Warrior I'd argue was a tad more punk with all the mohawks and not much long hair, but that's really just "splitting hairs"...pun intended. The costume designer for RW was even the same person involved with design on the Sex Pistols: Rock in Roll Swindle doc. Fury Road was like putting all of this heavy metal/punk inspired madness into a blender and whipping it up turbo-speed

I love the Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle. The Sex Pistols Disco medley by the Black Arabs was wonderful.

Moriceau, the costume designer on RW also did 'No Escape' with Ray Liotta. The costumes were very much in the same vein as RW.

Oh yeah , thinking back yeah they are pretty similar.

Metalheads love Mad Max -- especially Aussie metalheads.

Melbourne metal fan here, can think of plenty of bands who namedrop or were visually influenced by MM. Pegazus for instance have a music video that is very influenced by MM1.

I'm friends with a band called Toecutter who play thrash metal... the vocalist is nicknamed Dr Death after the character from Stone, and wears a top hat with a feather in it just like him. And he owns (or owned) a replica XA at some point.
