I mean our civilisation isn't just gone, its almost erased. Listen to how the old women are talking, things like satellites are almost folklore. It's set in 2060AD, I can't see how that style of world has not been in place for at least 20 years. Maybe it's just me but In think it's too futuristic for Max to have been a cop at Hardy's age. I mean the only thing we literally see of any sort of a pre apocalypse landmark is that old pylon and it's treated as almost something from ancient egypt Ironically if Mel had been onboard the cop angle would have had more relevance, it would have given a comfortable 20 to 30 years for the FR world to evolve.?

I had that same "this would fit better with older, Mel's Max" feeling. Old women and warlords are the only pre-apocalyptic characters and Tom's Max and Furiosa are the first post-apoc generation, or born just before the apocalypse.
Tom's Max could've been the member of the Cop Tribe who were searching for the "righteous cause" until something happened, they died, he couldn't save them etc.

BUt after finally seeing it, no way it fits into the original trilogy timeline.

"33 years from the bad day".

Simple. The Wasteland and its sub-cultures developed along with the cities' downfall, which was SLOW. Two different worlds. Max was coming from the cities.

Nice work, but I do have a few thoughts. Firstly, Max doesn't have to be 37 just because Hardy is. Actors routinely play older and younger than they actually are.

Therefore, we could suppose that Max is 47, which would make it more plausible that he had a career as a police officer in a pre-collapse society and then there was time for at least one generation to be born and come of age prior to the events in "Fury Road."

'Nother thing: I know there's an extensive timeline for the original trilogy elsewhere on this site that somebody put a lot of good thought into, and one thing I love about that timeline is that it assumes the Mad Max universe exists almost concurrently to our own.

I don't recall the specifics, but since Mad Max 1 was made in 1979, and takes place "a few years from now," i.e., a few years from 1979, that timeline has Max's world falling apart while ours soldiered on without a pockyclypse (not yet, anyway).

I had dreaded the thought that this new film might contain modern cars, but it doesn't. We are mercifully spared the sight of Cadillac Escalades or Hyundai Sonatas tricked out for wasteland duty. Other than an early 1980s looking Mercedes body on that one truck, I think every car body seen in this film is from the 1970s or earlier.

And there are no computers like you might see in some post-apocalypse films, and no iPod like in "Book of Eli."

The only piece of high technology electronics is Furiosa's prosthetic hand, and if you compare it to the actual prosthetic hands that are available to folks like Gulf War veterans in today's real world, her hand seems a little low-tech by comparison.

So.

Miller has given is a world that contains almost no technological artifacts at all from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, or teens.

I think Fury Road is taking place in the present. Or, if not the present, it's taking place just "a few years from now."

One of his "medals" is a circuit board, and just above it is a keypad. My guess was a cordless phone, late 90s earliest but looks newer to me. That's assuming the circuit board and keypad go together, they do have a similar shape. The keypad doesn't look like a cellphone keypad at all, but the circuit board by itself could be an early 2000s cellphone. It seems to have some kind of large port at one end, which might be a charging port, but cordless phones usually just have two contact pads for charging, so that leans more towards cellphone. Who knows though .

I think the circuitry alone though suggests something 90s at the very earliest. I think I'll find somewhere online to post it for identification.

Anyway, doesn't matter , just stuck out in my mind when I read your comments.

I know where you're coming from but... he looks 37. There will be sequels and he will be in his early forties by then, doing acrobatics and fighting like a gladiator. No way a 50 years old Max can do that.

There is a R32 Nissan Skyline coupe (1989 - 1993) I believe it's a genuine GTR which was a repairable write-off before being modified for the movie.

I'm glad you have kept Fury Road separate from the original trilogy.
It's just more logical that way.
