It seems obvious Fury Road is written with older Max in mind, with him and Furiosa being "adult figures" to feral children.
And to add to it, Tom Hardy looks a lot younger than he actually is. He's 10 years older than Mel's (real) age in Thunderdome!

Ditch the interceptor and make Max a pedestrian at the beginning and it would tie in perfectly with connected endings & beginnings from previous movies.

But the interceptor does make things a lot more fun, though, and you can't really be that mad on foot, can you?

Like everyone said here, fury road script is almost the same as the 2003-gibson one. Which is why maybe with Gibson on board it would made a little more sense because of his age. They even used the Interceptor from the 2003 one for Fury Road here. Now how much of the script's been altered for this 2015 one we don't know. Though Gibson did describe the story as more pure and a pretty good one which sounds like its different from what i see in the trailer, at least that's my impression from seeing the trailer and what you guys said about the screenings.

Fury Road was seemingly conceived as the "true" follow up to Mad Max 2/Road Warrior so that was entirely possible.

I doubt there'd be much uproar if that was even the case too.

What if:

Mad Max - Max is 22 years old
The Road Warrior - Max is 27 years old
Fury Road - Max is 42 years old

He looks 30 by sure. I was tweaking his age to accomodate Fury Road.
