Going even further back, those with long memories will remember the rumors that said Max had a small part to play in the film, perhaps only appearing in flashback. Could it be that these flashback scenes are the aforementioned subplot that feeds into the main story (or something similar), and are the same scenes being "lifted" from the original script and adapted into it's own stand alone anime?
This would explain the re-appearance of the Interceptor?
If Mel isnt playing Max, then you couldnt have flashbacks of Mel. So im guessing some scenes will be recreated with the "new" Max to fill in the gaps for the new generation of viewers... just a thought.
First, it seems there will be an anime and a film, not a mix (the way it was explained reminded me of The Animatrix or Black Freighter ie.
Exactly what I thought.

Of course that doesn't explain all the talk by everyone of Hardy taking over the role of Max, but if you wanted to keep what I speculated above a secret, what choice would you have but to be deceptive and *gasp* lie.
If you go this way, the lie may be about Mel's non involvement in the live action movie
Another video interview with Mel. About three quarters through he's asked about an appearance in Mad Max 4.
Q: Mad Max 4, George Miller is back in this one. Any chance there's going to be a cameo for you in the movie?
MG: No, I don't think so. Well....at least....I had dinner with George last week and there was no mention of it, so I figure it's not in the books.
Yep, another definite probably not. If not about Fury Road, what exactly are these two very busy men chatting about during their numerous recent phone conversations and (apparently) dinner together?

I hope. Mel is not convincing at all. He's ready for a Lethal Weapon 5... and not Mad Max 4??! I don't know why, but I think Mel's playing a game here: the same one he played in 2002 before signing on.
he won't cameo...not even narrate wow mel seriously you won't take the punishment of reading lines in a booth while someone else takes the blows. and what of edge of darkness mels not exactly sitting around in that movie. oh well flock it it's mel's choice and he's sitting it out. the silver lining (imo.) is that he says it's a sequal to thunderdome but sounds like it's returning to it's road warrior roots. err okay wait if this is indeed a sequal then how are they going to explain mels younger appearance? -rolls eyes.- i know it will be cool but this is getting harder to take seriously as a core fan. let's hope the anime/cgi thing is done well and the games come together so that we might see some good merchandise.

Where does he say he's ready for the Lethal Weapon?

tbh, it doesn't appear quite that way to me. From the way Mel sounds here and elsewhere, it would seem that he would be game for a cameo if Miller wanted him for it. After all, Mel has the acting bug again, and he thinks so much of Miller that he once said he'd do a shaving commercial for him if asked. I just don't think Miller's plans for Fury Road allow for a cameo. I mean, if Hardy is Max, any appearance by Mel would be kinda weird, and worse, a distraction.

At the end of the last video. About LW5, Mel said: "That one depends on story". That sounds to me a better answer than "I'm too old for that"
