MM2 BLU RAY

Post by The Guzzolene Express »

Merry Christmas All!

I was lucky enough to pick up MAD MAX 2 on Blue Ray for Christmas and even got to watch it after lunch.
I have to say that the quality on blu ray absolutely blew me away! It was so good that it gives away many of the films FX techniques!

I saw at least 3 guide wires during direct arrow hits the most noticeable is when Pappagallo get it in the leg at the flame thrower.
Also the guy hiding in the front passenger seat in the rig after the door gets ripped from its hinges is as clear as day now.

I hadn't sat down to watch MM2 for about a years or so, but one thing that bothered me yesterday was the over cranking (or under cranking?) of the film to make the cars seem to be going faster. Why!!!!!!!!!! In my opinion, it wasn’t warranted.

Finally, can someone explain why after Max rolls the truck and the rest of the feral gang riders approach the rig the film turns blurry? Was this intentional?

Anyway Merry Xmas

If you listen to the commentary you'll hear that the undercranking was because they couldn't drive fast enough safely over that uneven terrain - but I agree it looks bad.
The blurry shot is also discussed in the commentary. They needed that shot and the sun was going down so they didn't have enough light. They had no choice but to shoot it anyway but there wasn't enough light to get proper focus. If I remember right, it was a Friday night and to redo the shot they would have had to clear all the debris off the road, open up the road for the weekend to traffic, then come back on Monday after shutting the road down again and then re setup all the debris as well as bringing the whole crew back. There just wasn't the budget to do that.

Funny you should mention it; I was just going to post about this. I don't have a BD player or an HDTV, but my parents do, so I bought MM2 for them (that is, to keep at their house so I can watch it when I visit). Usually I'll watch the opening chase and then skip around. This time I watched the opening chase and then decided to take a look at the Mundi Mundi Lookout sign. I paused the movie as Max runs to the crashed buggy. I was sitting across on the couch, and I was amazed that when I walked to within a foot or so of the TV, I could actually read the smaller signs attached to the big sign (including "Los Angeles 3500" and "Casablanca 3500"). When I step-framed the Landau rollover, I noticed that not only does the Landau clip one of the small signs (I think I'd seen it before), but the big sign is completely blank.

Then I step-framed the close-ups of Wez's bike. It's well-established that the fairing is a Vetter Quicksilver, but in HD you can actually see the Quicksilver logo (faintly) on the fairing. I also noticed for the first time (probably mentioned here already) that Wez is wearing a nut and bolt through his left earlobe.

And those are just a few of the things I spotted. It's a whole new world of MM appreciation! :)

You guys and your fancy pants blu-ray
I got the regular version thats been out for a few years in the cheapie cardboard box.
I could, however very easily make out the cable that pulls the "shoot the tyre" bike under the rig, and the detonation charge on the engine block when the Gyro Cpt. gets shot down.

I'll be that guy and say I thought the use of under-cranking was actually pretty interesting, and a fair throwback to the type of films that acted as partial inspiration for the series -those being Buster Keaton's silent movies, primarily The General.

Had never noticed Max's dashboard police light in the back when dog jumps in after Max switches the blower off till i saw it on blu ray.Looks great on Bluray apart from the desert looking greener than the orange dusty look it has on normal dvd.

Check that the component cables are in correctly and fully engaged. Those are notorious for making the colour wonky if they are not in right.
