Actually, yes. It was only in front of my house for one night, and someone called the cops on me and I had to take the bodies off. Somehow my machine was scaring someone's kids. The cops were very cool about it though.

lol, Man that was a very inspiring story about your Interceptor replica!! I'm only trying to build a Goose bike but I feel very good about pulling it off and making it to California this November. Kudos, bro, kudos!!

Wow, just read your story. Good stuff! I particularly appreciate your honesty about the magnitude of the task. Right now I have a fairly stuffed up XC Coupe on it's way over. My plans are a MM2 version replica and I know the challenge is going to be immense....despite what I *think*.

Great story and great job on your car mate! I think everyones replicar has his or hers own flair to it that they liked and no ones car is truly 100% accurate and in the end its your car so you do it how you want it! ;)

There is always apprehension when you exhibit your work in front of your peers.
Especially when it is a project that is very dear to probably most of our hearts. The reason that most of us are on here and still talking about Mad max is because it had such a dramatic impact on our youth. So much so, we still carry it with us today and it inspires us to talk about it and create these wonderful machines. I can honestly say I became a policeman because of mad max 1. As a young and impressionable teenager, I wanted to be just like max.
Im kind of glad I didnt want to be completely like him. Lets face it, as capable as he is behind the wheel or in the dome, he's not the most charismatic or outgoing of characters I've seen and his social skills are not world class.
As for my project....

Humvee, that truck looks so cool and menacing, If I was some anal TMU copper who didn’t love the film and saw the truck. I would probably be asking for spike strips to be set up a few blocks ahead. Lol. The truck looks excellent. It’s a real credit to you.

Thanks Aaron. I agree totally. If you are a pedestrian and you come into contact with the bonnet of a moving vehicle, I would be more concerned with the 1 and a half tonne motor vehicle that I’ve just stepped in front of, rather than what type of hood ornament it has.

Thanks Zykotec. It may pay to inquire with your road governing body if the ruling on old vehicles is limited to a certain year of manufacture, as opposed to a certain age of the vehicle. (both sound similar but are very different when it comes to legislation)
If it’s the year of manufacture being prior to 71 and that does not change then you may have trouble with your max car plans. If it is the age of the vehicle then that may be good news. If the current limit is cars built prior to 71, then in 3 years time it will be cars built prior to 74. This would allow you to purchase an XA falcon coupe.
Its worth checking anyway.

The Sergent ended up riding one of the Goose replica bikes in the afternoon when things were closing down for the night, he was following the Toe Cutter replica! Your dead right Pat. When I went to register the vehicle at Vic roads, they could only give me the license plate MAXV-8. I pleaded, threatened and even tried seducing the lady to move the spacer so it read MAX-V8. She said that she would love to do it for me but the way the plates are made, they use the spacer to separate letters from numbers and that is why it would appear as the first one. I ended up ordering the plates anyway as I really wanted that configuration. As soon as I got them, I contacted a novelty plate manufacturer and asked him to make MAX-V8. I got them in a week and it cost $80 incl postage. I bolted them straight on. Unfortunately he cannot print states on the plate as its illegal for him to do it.

I was pulled over on my way to the Bright Rod Run last year in the car and the policeman wanted to know what state the car was registered in. I explained the story and I keep the vicroads plates in the boot which I showed him. He then checked the rego sticker and it reads differently. It shows the vehicle as registered under MAXV8
(note: for anybody interested in doig this, the ‘spacer dot’ does not count as a character in registration, therefore its position on the license plate is not relevant.)
He understood why I had done it. My explanation which hinted at the relevant points of law may also have indicated I knew what I was talking about and was either an ex member or worked in the law profession. I never volunteered which. As for having the novelty plates on the car, I was committing an offence. Even though it is the same registration, I was “displaying false plates”.
He didn’t even mention this though so I didn’t bring it up. As he was walking back to his car he actually stopped and said
“You know………….. we should be driving those” With that he left.
Last week I used a set of tin snips to cut the “vic” lettering from a standard plate and glued them on. Hopefully problem solved.

You are very true in the fact that you indicated it will never be “Done”. I have to say, I don’t think project cars ever get to a stage where they are “Completed”. As owners, we will always look at certain things and want to improve them or change them or replace certain items. And I think if they ever did reach a stage of completion, then our enthusiasm would disappear and we would move on to something else, and there lies the unnoticeable death of a dream. Don’t ever finish it, I don’t intend to either.

Thank you Matt, It was a real eye opener and I’m not sure if I would ever approach another car project again, not now that I know what’s involved. I’m glad I approached it at the time with a healthy dose of naivety. If I knew what I was in for, I would never have done it, or put it off for too long and then sold the car as an unfinished project. Your right, Im glad I got my hands dirty. I ended up with a champagne car on a beer budget.
I could not have done it without Marke Kemp and my panel beater Bradley. I made Bradley the best man at my wedding that day. In hindsight I should have picked somebody else. Reason being, the poor bugger was still performing a duty in the wedding instead of sitting back relaxing and drinking some well earned sherberts. Instead he was posing for pictures and writing a speech on a napkin.....Lol.

Thanks. Good luck with the bike. If you come up short on the bike by roadwar, you can make up for it in costume. That’s the beauty of “Gosling1”.
I’ve seen the pics for roadwar and I wish I could take part. Im envious of what you boys can get away with on the roads in the states.

Marke, I meant what I said, If it wasn’t for you I would probably be still scratching around for parts, or have a replica that I had to skimp on and would be miserable. You should bundle that full kit and sell it. Get Peter Barton to advertise it on his website. I never even got a return call from that “Advanced spoilers” company listed. Your kit has every part needed for the body work. It’s a once stop shop.

I took about 200 photos during the build and I would like to send them to you. I only posted about 20 on the forum highlighting main steps. I didn’t add the whole story with the twists and turns otherwise it would have gone on forever.
I still remember your words on the phone when I asked if the kit just bolts on. You said yes but there is a fair amount of work involved with any fibreglassing and moulding project to get it flush. I had no idea what I was in for, and looking back I thought you just line it up and bolt it on before painting. I laugh at how stupid I was.
I really want to see the Batmobile. Last time we spoke, It was just an idea. It would be great to see it at a stage of construction.

Thank you Trab, I really had no idea how much needed to be done. What didn’t help was the fact I’m about as ‘car savvy’ as my mum. I really had to rely on my mate on a number of levels. Not only his experience, but he helped push me to get it done. If you can align yourself with somebody then you will probably get it moving. Even if it just boils down to a friend that will show up and motivate you to work on the car.
Its really cool that you have taken the steps to buy the car and its being sent over. It will be very exciting for you. Next you will need a “Marke Kemp mad max kit” Lol.
If you’re going for a MM2 version, you can always trim the bottom of the nose cone off.

Thanks for the comments Bart and Im glad you agree about personalisation. If we didn’t build it to please ourselves by adding our own touch, then we are simply building it to please somebody else.

Thank Alan. I also want to thank you for going out of your way to welcome me to the forum a couple of weeks ago. It was good to talk to you the other night about your extensive collection of toys and of course the ‘new addition’ which I think will be a personal favourite of yours down the track. (if its not already)
Thankfully the Mrs does have a sense of humour. We took the car to Milawa on Sunday to a bushfire charity event. The Wangaratta car club was taking all of their cars there as an attraction. I’m not a member of the club but I am always invited along for runs because of the coupe (I think they must use me as a decoy to draw heat away from ‘their’ cars, If a copper is going to pull somebody up, its most likely going to be me…lol)

We drove down to the event, myself, Kelly and our 16 month old son Sam. We rolled into the muscle car section and the organiser had reserved a spot for MM1 in front of all the other cars. This was quite embarrassing as all eyes were on us and the car. It was like seagulls to hot chips. I don’t know who they were expecting but we got out and then I climbed in the back and unbuckled our toddler from the baby seat. The capsule mounted in the back of the coupe must have been an interesting sight.
One old lady in her sixties was besotted by the car and asked what it was. I told her it was a 73 falcon coupe which surprised her. Kelly then turned and said, “We don’t know too much about the car as we are just dropping it off, it’s being raffled today for the bushfire appeal”
With that, the woman hurriedly waddled off toward the ticket stand in the middle of the oval.

A bit later on, one teenager asked if the seat in the back is for a blue heeler. Kelly responded by saying” Yes, but the RSPCA wouldn’t let us adopt a dog. We ended up getting this kid on ebay for much cheaper anyway”

Working in the police force tends to give you a twisted sense of humour.

As for the heat problem Alan, I built that tunnel out of sheet metal for under the nose cone and Im going to test it this weekend (good excuse). If it forces more air into the radiator and drops the overall heat, then we will be up and cruising in no time. Great Alpine Road, here we come.
