Aftermath: Population Zero

Post by Chase Bansi »

I just watched a National Geographic show that deals with what would happen to the earth if humans were suddenly wiped out. Rather interesting scientific look into a post apocalyptic world after man. No, it's not related to Mad Max. Not directly any way. Quite fascinating and I highly recommend it if you get a chance to see it.

I caught some of it tonight too. Some nice visuals like the Vegas stuff. The absence of humans is an interesting post-apocalyptic scenario to think about.I plan to record it when its rescheduled.

I haven't seen the show you're speaking of, but I can guess what you're talking about deserted cities slowly falling into decay.

Yeah there's something fascinating about that, seeing the familiar landmarks crumble. I got that first jolt when I saw Planet of the Apes when Charlton Heston sees the crumbling statue of liberty at the end. It's held an interest for me ever since. I guess the Hollywood promotors know that too when they do posters, just have a look at the one they did for Day after Tomorrow, an ice covered statue of liberty.

Damn,I missed this show :x It looked very interesting seeing all the growth and trees come back and take over the cities that were built over it.

I believe this show is based on the book The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. It's a fascinating look at New York City and the effects that the natural world would have on the infrastructure after the human race had disappeared from the earth. If I remember correctly the NG special chronicled the area around Chernobyl? If not, there may be another documentary that aired on Discovery, History, etc.
BTW, The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, is another post apocalyptic work of fiction that brought to mind the MM theme in certain parts of the book. Very dark. Finally, is there any other fictional works that people could recommend that would be along these lines? I'd be interested to hear the suggestions.

elenafilatova.com is a great site that chronicles the area around Chernobyl

Hey Leigrab. I'm an avid book reader and found this "sister" forum to the mad max world which you might find interesting. There's a section devoted to books that others members have read and can recommend

Worth a gander here:

Hope it helps.

Again, thanks for the recommendations 'Hill. "On the Beach" is the book that really brought this genre to my attention and that was in the 6th grade! It's the reality of the setting in both "Beach" and "Road" that make both of these books VERY real to me. I'm not really into the "fantasy" PA settings but i'm definitely going to take your list to the library. BTW, they are supposedly in production for a film version of "Road". Viggo Mortenson is cast to play the father. I can only hope that they shoot it in B&W w/ color used for the flashbacks. Charlize Theron is set to play the mother and it wouldn't do her beauty justice if she were to be shot in B&W.

1 more ?. I understand they make a "Beach" remake in 2000 or so. Has anyone seen it?
