Max's Sandman

Seem like most cars from the film were carted off to the junkers or sold. The one I don't think I've seen any info on in the Red Sandman. Any information on what happened to this one?

It was traded in to a dealership in the late 70's / early 80's by the person who owned it when Mad Max was made. I don't have any specific info on what happened to it after that, a couple of people did claim over the years to have seen it at various ute / van car rallies, but again it's a vehicle I've had no new information on in over 10 years now - I'd presume probably wrecked or gone at this point, or modified / repainted to a point where it is no longer recognisable.

I've seen a couple of them on carsales.com.au. They were high for sure, but nowhere near what the Munros are going for!

I have been apart for the vanning scene for a good number of years now. we chat and try to find what happened to the top vans of the day. some have been stripped for parts and sold and a few got crushed. Some are still owned and now are coming back out on the show scene. but i have never meet a guy who knew what happened to maxs van. so many repilcas have been made of different max cars. i have thought about doing the same for his van

Hey Mack Tanker

I think the film you are thinking of is 'Freedom' with Jon Blake ... Scott Hick directed it long before Shine.

Disgruntlled factory worker Blake goes on the lam with confused single mother (Jad Capelja from Puberty Blues) in a stolen silver 930 Porsche.

One of Blakes mates (Chris Heywood) does drive a red Sandman which either gets crushed in reality or his imagination ... it's an odd film with flashes between reality and the central character's fantasy life.

I have a copy so will see if our memories are working ...

The van in Running on Empty is a Concorde Van.

The van in Freedom is a HQ with a HX Statesman front. I don't think it's a Sandman ... let lone Max's Sandman ... as it doesn't have a GTS wheel or dash but anything's possible.

Here's a screen capture of the van .... sorry the quality is poor but it's from a DVD I burnt from an ex Canadian rental VHS. This film is very hard to find ... even the people involve in making it don't have it!

It is a fantasy scene as the two mates drive along the van owner is banging on about nothing and our hero imagines the van being crushed.

Looks very much like there was some little known Govt ruling that all Oz film cars had to be fitted with an L88 scoop.

The van being crushed ...

its shame that happened to that van. thats a real 80s machine. There is too many differences from this van to Maxs van. AT least this van had a murel on both sides max only had one and they other side like the tail gate was just painted black. Maxs Vans paint makes it look like a kingswood not a Sandman. but it is a HJ and who ever did build it wrecked a HJ Statesman to do it. It has the twin head light front panel but maxs head lights are from a Falcon. When max slams into the back of the car in MM2 and busts up the front. the vans lights are the same in that falcon. Maxs van still got the drives side mirror from the same Statesman and a normal mirror on the left side.
