need beer advice

In most cases, if it was beer, I'd suck it out of the carpet, but there have been two that I've actually disliked the taste of enough to not finish: Olde English 800, and Fat Tire. And my wife loves Fat Tire. Well, she married me, so I should have known she had no taste to begin with. But it has a spiciness, or something, that just doesn't sit right. Another alcoholic--er, beer aficianado--friend of mine feels the same way about FT, do you get any of this from your tastes?

The next is Heineken in the keg can. Yes, I gave in to the novelty. They have even smaller keg cans. If you put those next to this 24oz can, it would look like a mother with its babies.


Upon opening, it has the beer smell. WARNING! Do not try to pour into a glass! The wide mouth makes it come out funny, and a lot flows down the side ofthe can! I lost quite a bit.


It has a bit of the beer taste, but not annoyingly so. I seem to get more of the beer taste when doing the empty mouth swish. It yeilds an interesting taste when I burp.


I am disappointed over the spillage. If you like using a glass, avoid this at all costs. I may try the bottle version in the future, because maybe my negative experience affected my judgement.


Speaking of glasses, does it matter if you use glass or plastic? The glass ones I use aren't big enough. There were some plastic 30oz ones at Walmart that were only 64 cents.


Aye laddies! I went the traditional route for my second choice and tried a bottle of Guiness Extra Stout, which has the yellow cap.


It has a beery smell upon opening. Someone said to let it sit for a while after pouring, so I'm doing that. The beer taste is more noticable, but actually is going away as it sits. Taking a sip 20 min after pouring made my tongue tingle. Doing the empty mouth swish both after swallowing and burping, not comparing the two, don't yeild consistent tastes. I sometimes get a burnt kind of taste.


This seems to have a lot of dissolved nitrogen since I've been burping a lot.

I would still like to hear some opinons on the glass vs. plastic issue.


Does the sit and wait approach only apply to Guinness, or should that be done with other stouts? And what about porters, or other kinds of beer for that matter?


The store I get my beer from is called Hy-Vee. A few of the other beers there I can think of right now are Dead Guy ale, Sierra Nevada stuff, and a brand with a goose on the 6-pack box.


Yesterday I checked out the beer section at the other grocery store, Price Chopper. They only sell a few single bottle beers. I like those so if something isn't good, I don't have 5 more bottles sitting around. They had both types of Guinness, and had Harp and/or Bass. They do have Red Stripe lager in the single bottle. They had 2 kinds of beer by a brand called Black Dog. There were a few varieties of Shiner beer including the bock. There was something else someone mentioned, but I'll have to go through the 3 different threads where this is posted. I think the company Warsteiner had a few. There was some company that had a cream ale. I can't remember the other stuff.

It's that time again next week. Hopefully I don't have car problems this time.

Does the pour and wait method only work for Guinness, or does it work for other stouts? And what aout porters, or other beers for that matter?

Guinness, Murphy's, Boddington's, and a few others come in special cans that have nitrogen capsules inside. When opened, the capsules release nitrogen gas into the beer. Nitrogen bubbles are different from CO2... smaller, no bite, and they stay suspended longer, which is why you have to wait for the "cascade" to complete. The end result should be an easier drinking beer with a thick creamy head.

I've had both ales and stouts from such cans.

Found one the other day at my local HyVee called Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale.

Haven't tried it yet, but being a Python fan.. I had to get it.. if for no other reason but Amusement value.

Yesterday, I just tried two beers for the second time.

First was the Heinekenin the keg can. I didn't spill any this time, but this time I was in a bit of a rush. I didn't get a chance to really enjoy it. I'm thinking it didn't taste as good as last time. I seem to have bad luck with these keg cans. I won't see if the third time is the charm.

Next is the Guinness with the yellow cap. After sitting for 10 min, the beer taste has gone.

I've read all these post's, and I honestly never put that much thought into beer. I like to drink beer, I've tried several different kinds, some I liked some I hated. But I always seem to come back to Budweiser. Maybe its the redneck in me I do like heineken (in the bottle) when I have money bursting into flames in my pocket. I guess its all just a matter of taste. However Coors does taste just a little better than dirty dishwater

Today is Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter. This has less of a beer taste than SS's two ales I tried. Doing the empty mouth swish yields a bit of burnt taste. Repeating after 10 minutes makes the burnt taste a bit more apparent. FYI, when I mention "burnt taste", it is not meant as negative.
