Car and Driver - July 07

Car and Driver July 07 page 106 American Idols

"Movie-car replicas are not really classics, not really restored, but are really big stupid fun."

First of all do not take this as an endorsement of C&Ds journalism expertise. They have it listed as a comparison test. John Schneider's General Lee, Back to the Future Delorean (snomobile), Starsky and Hutch Torino(hero car), Batmobile..er.. crimefighting roadster, and Paul Miller's Mad Max car. Amusing article. Closing line of the Max page: Mad Max made Mel Gibson a star, but his car is still relatively obscure. They don't know us very well do they?

I did not call Paul's car a BoB, because it isn't. It is all gloss black. It looks sharp but my eye instantly said WRONG. It was all I could do to not point it out to the uninitiated, but they wouldn't get it. His diamond plate floor mats are a cool touch. "The verdict, a postapocalyptical icon good-natured enough for a preapocalyptical world."

I just read it. The article does not do justice to the car, or the effort he put in to it. I liked the pictures. The car looked perfect to me.

I got my copy as well. Always cool to see the Mad Max car in print. What suprised me was how slow all of the cars were (except the Charger). You would think they would build a bit of spunk into the engine as well, when they go all out and do the rest of it, the Delorean and Batmobile especially.

Paul's got a great car, there's no doubt about that. My personal preference is for the black on black, but to each his own. It is interesting that each replica has something unique about it, making it easier to identify whose is whose. The rest of the world may not have a clue but I think we're a pretty sharp bunch (well, most of usImage)

As far as the performance test of the replicars remember this is Car and Driver- they have a very high standard of performance. It comes from driving the most exotic cars in the world. I can also see where some of these cars are more show than go. The batcar is a fiberglass body on frame. To much power under the hood and it would be full of fractures. The base Delorean is a fun car but I'll bet bolting a bunch of crap all over it does nothing to improve it's performance. The Torino, Charger, and Falcon should be performers but that is open to subjective evaluation; it's a perspective thing. They can't be judged against exoticars.

For the amount of $$$ into the charger it should be a wee bit faster, even if it has lousy diff gears.
