Buying a 71 Ford Mustang Mach 1 / Boss 351 for Oz

Dave

Sounds like a completely hassle free transaction and an absolute pleasure to deal with. I will certainly get in contact with him, tell him what I am after, and see how it goes from there. Does he charge on a commission basis, what were the costs involved aside from the obvious car cost and shipping? If he provided such excellent service, as well as taking care of little extras without increasing price at the last minute as may be expected, certainly seems like a promising option.

Are you a member of the Mustang Owners Club in Oz? I was thinking of asking them about the place you dealt with to see if they concur with you.

Great help, many thanks mate.

[div]Yep, we're in the Mustang owners club, if you contact the Victoria branch of the club you'll find the President is in fact the same Steve that owns Mustangs of Melbourne. I've not found anyone in the club with a bad word to say about Steve.[/font][/div]
[div][/font] [/div]
[div]The way it works is that his main cash flow business seems to be the importation of all the mustang parts, I believe this is why he's so reasonable when it comes to the cars themselves..... take me for example I paid what I saw as a very fair price for the GTA, once Steve found a car that suited us he told us what he wanted for it (AU$28k landed BTW) & that was the end on road price.... now when the GTA came in, they went over the car & they replaced some of the breaking system as they had worn & the front windscreen & replaced some trivial little trims bits that where missing (this was a small gesture but one he wasn't obliged to do). He also gave us the option of replacing anything else on the car that we weren't happy with (this would have been at my expense) but I declined as I like turning spanners on my own cars.[/font][/div]
[div][/font] [/div]
[div]I've now been back & spent nearly another grand buying new parts & options for the car, so I guess if he looks after people buying the cars (he's been doing this for 21 years) then he has a good chance of making more money over the long run on parts (this is where the $$ are to be made).[/font][/div]
[div][/font] [/div]
[div]Next time your back in Melbourne, head out & have a chat with Steve..... that way you can get a feel for him, he also normally has half a dozen cars in the showroom & a wall of pictures for the cars he has on way.[/font][/div]
[div][/font] [/div]
[div]I'd just like to add, that I have no affiliation with Steve or Mustangs of Melbourne at all...... I'm just a very happy customer & in this day & age of people only being in the car business to make a quick buck at any cost, I found Steve to be a breath of fresh air.[/font][/div]

Understood. Sounds like the type of person who is harder to find these days as you say. Someone who actually loves and cares for what they do, which would be simple when it comes to Mustangs. Certainly in my position, this would be the easiest and by the sound of it, safest option.

Again, Dave, thanks for spending the time to inform me. Now I feel I can concentrate more on my exciting hunt for the XA,XB,XC Falcon coupe.

Also, I welcome any other opinions other members have regarding their experiences, or knowledge of the Boss 351 vs the Mach 1.

I have seen him around a few places here and there.. I've been at this for a while and know alot of the folks around Melbourne I suppose who have gotten into importing (and the guys who have been at it forever as well).

Come to think of it, a week or so before I left there (I was over for Feb till late April) I pulled up to some lights in with my mate in his '99 Ram Air Trans-Am and Steve pulled along side in one of his Mustangs (think it was a fast back from memory)

May anyone be able to give me an opinion on what they think this car could be worth? From my estimation, a lot less than the quoted US$70,000 price tag.......

This is an early model 71 Mach 1 Fastback with just a 429 CJ motor..not a SCJ. It has almost every option a Mustang would have had back in 1971 except for the rear window defogger. I do have the original invoices..there are 3 of them which in and of itself is very unusual! I have the Marti Elite Report also.

No warranty card however.

The car is mechanically perfect. Runs great and is very strong. It only has 71,000 original miles on it.

The car has never been crashed that I know of and I have had it for over 20 years. I bought the car from whom I believe was the first owner after it was sold from the Ford dealership in Arizona.

Chaser, Sam Auxier was well known drag racer back in the 60's and 70's and drove a variety of Fords I believe and from his website he states he sold the car long ago and would love to know what became of it and several other race cars he had.Scars right about the 1/18 scale version being sold now.its a bit pricey at 65$ American but worth it to a hard core Mustang fan. I once owned a 69 fastback basket case that i never got on the road sadly.

Heres a pic of the diecast car thats out now and the website for Sam Auxier is http://www.samauxierjrracing.com
