I'm sure the govts console themselves at night with the thought of the millions of $$$ they made selling off the land and buildings tho.

Biker sez:

When I got there the place was being run down because some pencil neck in government decided the care in the community scheme would work better. They'd tried in it America and it didn't work there (see G.W.Bush as a prime example) so what made the UK government think it'd work here?

You're bang right, Biker. Mistakes are made repeatedly if money can be made in the short term.

The transition killed a lot of patients too - suddenly moving after 20 years of safe care in unchanging surroundings with faces you recognise and people you know into a house with no friends, strange people, no-one to tell you when to eat, help you wash, give you your medication.. Neglect, self-harm, drug abuse and death for a large percentage as it turned out. Terrible.

There's a mental hanicap hospital called Turner Village in Essex.. it's been knocked down now and GUESS WHAT? There are over 40 mentally handicapped people living in bed and breakfast accomodation in the same county, because there is not enough disabled housing. Poor souls are going to be shunted from one place to the next, with no stability or familiarity with their surroundings at all. The worst thing that would happen at an actual mental hospital is you may be moved to another ward. At least the view out of the window would be the same.

Oh, in an effort to keep the thread on target...

Rockatansky, Bart... show yourselves!

Major Tom-disabled hospital being sold off in Melbourne atm-Kew Cottages(many acres=many $$$)...view to die for, heritage buildings Heritage Victoria rolled over to let be bulldozed, many patients being farmed out to "community housing" with huge increases in rent, medical and dental care,on-site carers fees, food, social needs...oh and our ever-so-delightful PM reviewed disabled pensions...............able to work more than 15 hours per week(in ANY capacity) you don't qualify for the disabled pension.Mental health hospitals went the same way about 20 years ago here Image

Back on topic.....Bart darls...I'm almost 37,time aint been kind to this old broadImage

Hey Biker,

I spoke to a friend of mine about St. Augustine's, he went up to see it. Apparently it's not too bad a conversion, the developers have kept the admin block and the water tower, so it's retained what is architecturally the best building. They wanted to get rid of the tower too, but Kent Council are forcing them to keep it and convert it into a house. Many of them just get totally levelled and lost forever, so in that respect it's certainly had a lucky escape.

Some people have still not posted a picture of themselves, not even a picture of a bit of themselves. Bart showed his tattoo at least. I was hoping to see Rockatansky's little finger of his right hand, which I'm very interested in.
