Perhaps the Black Specials were NEW?





It's always appeared to me that the Main Force tended to channel as much funds as possible into maintaining their Pursuit vehicle fleet.


This leads me to the thought that perhaps Sarse & Scuttle's Interceptor was perhaps 3-4 years old, Roop & Charlie's Pursuit car was maybe 2 and Max's car was less than a year.





The Black cars were perhaps Factory Prototypes & such which were only very recently purchased by the Force.





The Falcon had more modifications made to it and therefore took longer to get ready.





I remember wayyyyyy back when our State highway patrol was using the Mustangs for patrol cars.


it wasn't anything unusual to see an 84, an 86 and an 89 parked at Headquarters on the west end of town.





(Dammit, I wish I could have gotten my claws on that '86.. Car had a Paxton centrifugal supercharger and a bunch of other mods. Sold at auction with all the goodies intact for $2500)

Max's branch of the MFP did have a black Pursuit Special Monaro.....very similar to the Nightriders stolen ride. It was sitting in the underground parking lot. (Awaiting insertion into the fleet? Awaiting repairs? Awaiting the Dark One's return?)

Not awaiting the Dark One's return. The Dark One was Max's partner. Maybee they yanked the " Last V-8" out of that particular car and installed it in the BoB.

I still maintain that the Black Specials were new.





Perhaps Max declined the Monaro Pursuit Specials because he's had his Yellow Interceptor souped up to the point where it's much faster than the Monaros?





Do we see evidence backing this theory in the film??

If you look at Max's reaction to the BonB, his query to Barry, and Barry's response, "a piece from and a piece from there", it is quite evident that one of three things is true.


1- It's a regular BonB Pursuit Special with an engine that was not normal even for Pursuit Specials.


2- The entire car is outside of normal MFP spec, not just the engine, but every part of the car was 'scavenged', a piece from here and a piece from there.


3- There is no official MFP process for creating Pursuit Specials. Each sector does what it can, operating as an almost independent entity. The Sun City Sector was apparently able to put together a Monaro PS. It would be like if highway patrolmen put together their own pursuit specials or hotrodded their patrol cars at their own initiative or cost.

Totally agree. Which is why the Monaro, to me, was probably candy for another driver, in another precinct.

I've always felt that Barry's comment of "It just happened, Max. A piece from here, a piece from there" rang very strongly of deception.





IMO, Barry & Goose were trying to convince Max that it was No Big Deal & steer him away from the idea that the Force had just spent a great deal of money on HIM.





If we Assume that Barry really DID build it, he was given a huge budget to work with, and the same applies.


(Myself, I don't think he did most of the work. I think the car was commisioned to a more professional performance shop and the situation was staged to make it LOOK as if he built it. Again, this is just an opinion)

Your right that the Force did spend money on him, which was Labatouche's (sp?) complaint. But Max is no dummy and the explanation that Barry had to scrounge to find the parts seemed very plausible to him. In fact, he was surprised that Barry was able to do it. All of which points to the idea that this was an exceptional instance, that 'candy' was not often used to retain an officer. From the condition of the Halls of Justice we can assume that the MFP did not have much of a budget. The entire operation has an air of desperation to it. The force had to make do with what they had or do a little creative accounting and scavenging. Perhaps the Monaro in the garage, Goose's bike, and even the BonB all started as police impounds and confiscated material. If you look at the chase in the beginning of MM, there were tow trucks on the road before Goose was. This was definitely a culture taking the idea of reuse/recycle/conserve to the extreme. There was nothing new. All that would exist had already been made.


In the movie 'Dead End Drive In", the guy who made the movie said he made it as a kind of prelude to Mad Max, he explored the idea of tow truck/wrecker drivers determining salvage rights to the vehicles involved in an accident before the paramedics could see to the victims.


This is a theme touched on in BTD, too, with the statement, "I finded him, I gets the salvage".
