Ok. Max was the MFP's top driver.

The best.

My question is, in MM1, why was Max driving a yellow Interceptor when he could have been assigned the black Pursuit Special (as stolen by the Nightrider)?

Wouldn't you think the MFP's top driver would be assigned the force's top vehicle? Was there a better driver than Max?

Being that the black Interceptor was created as 'candy' to keep Max on the force, was the black Pursuit Special, in fact, created as 'candy' to keep another top driver in the MFP? Maybe, the Dark One?

Being that the Head Of the MFP told Fifi he didn't enjoy using 'candy' to keep its top drivers, one could assume he'd used the 'candy' tactic before...aka the Pursuit Special.

I think we (as Mad Max fans) in general are thinking too small in the scope of the MFP. The MFP wasn't in just one city, nor were they only one branch / division / unit. Just like any police force, I think we should assume that the MFP was all over Australia, in the populated centres, at least. I would hazzard a guess that there were several "Pursuit Specials" of varying design. (for instance we know that the 'Nightrider' vehicle is from Sun City, ie. not local to Max and his crew.) Was Max the best driver in the whole MFP? We don't know. We don't see the whole MFP, we just see five local cops (Roop, Charlie, Max, Goose, and Fifi) and two cops from a neighboring region (Sarse and Scuttle) I would guess that Max is not the very best of the MFP, but he is definitely the best of his local force, thus the decision to grant him a Pursuit Special.

And no, I don't think that Pursuit Specials are used as 'candy' in every case. I think the Black Interceptors are used as terror tactics / intimidation for gangers and scum, much like today. (in Canada, most 99% of cop cruisers are Ford Sedans, big, heavy, made for carting groceries. But there are, or were a few super-hot Camaros that were converted to use as highway pursuit vehicles... intimidation.) The gangs would know the reputation of the dreaded black cars, and would fear them.

So I don't think that the MFP made any policy to say that Pursuit Specials were never to be made, or to be given out as 'candy' only... I just think we are hearing one politician's opinion about 'wasting money.'

Bottom line: don't assume that the MFP is as small as we see in the movie. There were lots of other cops... maybe hundreds. That means that there must be other Pursuit Specials out there.

But if there are so-called 'intimidation' vehicles, why wouldn't Max's MFP unit already have one? After all, they patrol the 'mean highways'.

To me, the whole MFP organisation looked strapped for cash, so you'd need to be someone special for them to spend the money to build a beauty like the PS and BonB.

Yeah its a good point, i reckon every one of the 'precints' for lack of a better word, plus i don't even know how to spell it, probably had a couple each, reserved for 'special' occasions.

OK now my view as i feel im an expert on the MFP as my great great great grandfather was in the MFP,they all had a black pursuit except for the branch we see as it was the head office and since they had MAX working out of it they coped well enough with him driving a yellow interceptor, but as we see they had to offer him one to stay!!!

Kirbydog has a point. The Sun City equivalent of Max Rockatansky would have been given that particular " Pursuit Special on methane" because HE wanted to quit.

That's my point. If other branches had BonBs, why didn't the MFP centre we see have one? 'Sun City' sounds like it was a suburb or city ie. population. If so, I would have thought an MFP branch patrolling the highways would have had one or two BonBs; that's where you need the extra grunt.

Dont forget that this chase had been going on for a few hours according to the dispatcher. And that he had escaped from SunCity. A few hours at high speeds would be a few hudred kilometers. So that Pursuit Special belonged from that area. We only assume MFP headquarters where Max works is also in Suncity.
