What's on the Menu?

Post by Foxtrot X-Ray »

In a recent discussion on another board, the topic rolled around to one of my favorite subjects, FOOD.

Most of the posters there are British and I'm a "Yank", so a bit of Culture Shock was to be expected.

So it occurred to me that a bit of Menu comparison might be entertaining.

Breakfast: (Weekdays) More than a bit odd, I'll admit. My weekday breakfast is a can of Campbell's Vegetable Beef soup and a can of Coca-Cola. It's quick, fills me up and will keep me going adequately until lunchtime.

On the weekends, I usually choose one of the following

"Eggy-Mess" a scramble with eggs, southern-style fried potatoes and ham.

French Toast

Breakfast Burritos, Scrambled eggs, (Hot) Pace Picante sauce and crushed tortilla chips in a flour tortilla

Or sometimes, boring old Sunny-side up eggs with toast.

When out for breakfast, I'll sometimes choose Biscuits & gravy. (This is the one that caused the British folks to freak out.. "Sausage gravy on Biscuits? Are you MAD??" Apparently the British think Biscuits are some sort of cookie-like objects.) Image

Lunch: Usually leftovers from the previous night's dinner.

Except Wednesday. A bar virtually across the street from my work has a Chicken Fried Steak lunch special that's quite good.

Dinner: Several of my favorite recipes..

Chicken Fettuccini - Stir fried chicken breast with veggies. Served on fettuccini noodles.

"Noodle Stuff" Cream of mushroom soup poured on hamburger patties, noodles and bread. (Weird, yes. But tasty)

Chicken & cheese Rollups. (Rolled in croissants.)

"Gruel" Similar to "Noodle stuff" but hamburger's broken up, substitute rice for noodles & bread and add a dollop of sour cream mixed in the soup..

Beef & noodles.

"Meat Pie" searched for recipe's after reading Terry Pratchet's "Last Continent" Discworld novel.

Set on " XXXX" (the map makers didn't know what to call it) an Australia paralleling continent on Discworld. The "Meat Pie Floater" features prominently in this book. We decided the Pea soup and tomato sauce were... unnecessary after the first attempt.

You like your noodles, don't ya? Everything there sounds pretty good to me, even the soup for breakfast. Might pass on the "meat pie" till I know more about it. Beef is meat. so is horse, dog, and badger. I'm guessing it's like a beef pot pie? then that sounds good too.

OK, slingblade, what do you like for a normal meal? This is an interesting question. See what the other guys find normal, and what seems really wrong. (like the brits getting a mental picture of gravy on cookies!)

Hmmm, let's see...

Breakfast...nothing, maybe orange juice. Bacon and eggs on an everything bagle on Saturdays or Sundays.

Lunch...Anything goes, but usually Subway or soup.

Dinner...preferably pizza, but I put up with whatever else I can get the other six days of the week.

I'm on the Atkins Diet so I eat:

Breakfast: Bacon and Eggs, Water

Lunch: Grilled Chicken Filet or Grilled Chicken Salad with Ranch Dressing, Diet Coke

Dinner: Meat and salad, water, or tea sweetened with Splenda.

No bread, pasta, chips, or potatoes.

Every so often I treat myself to a can of Dinky Di dog food.

Just a cold black coffee for breakfast and french bread. I'm alway in a hurry. Sometimes this bread is so hard the next day that you can kill somebody with it!Image

Cheese for lunch or something light (vegetables).

A "Pantagruelique" diner (from Pantagruel, a novel character by Francois Rabelais)[/font]to save the day (Italian, french or german food)

So famous is the wildly obscene humor of Gargantua and Pantagruel that its author's name has given rise to an adjective--"Rabelaisian"--to describe just such humor. Rabelais was a monk and a physician, but in his writings he celebrated his real loves: scholarship and drinking, with the latter often serving as a symbol of the former. As a beneficiary of the age of the printing press, he was intoxicated by the sudden availability of all manner of books. As much as any of the Renaissance Humanists, it is Rabelais who articulates their view that a new age has dawned. If his portrait of the Middle Ages as a time of ignorance and superstition is grossly exaggerated (and it is), it nevertheless helps to convey the excitement of the Humanists during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This passage, a letter from father to son advising him on his education, is written in the elaborate, balanced style of formal prose in the period, quite unlike the tumbling, bawdy narrative that surrounds it. Read aloud, with appropriate pauses at the punctuation marks, it conveys a grand rhythmic majesty.

I could probably make it on my own, but I like you kids.

Breakfast...when I have the time for it...Breakfast burrito (eggs,potatos,ham/bacon wrapped in flour tortilla) or perhaps 2 eggs sunnyside up,bacon (almost burnt) ,biscuits and gravy!

Lunch...when I get the time for it...ham sandwich on Russin Rye Black bread with Miracle Whip and provolone cheese and tomato or BLT (bacon, lettuce, tomato on toast) with checken noodle soup.

Dinner...toss up there...Top Sirloin (medium rare) grilled on mesquite chips and grilled tomato and pineapple and a big grilled portabella mushroom! Or Tex-Mex enchiladas (Ckicken w/ sour cream or beef or cheese enchiladas!) a couple of crisp tacos, black beans and rice!

And of course a big ol' Dr.Pepper to make it all go down!

Yum!

Wow..

What a variety.

Even from my fellow Yanks.

Yeah, it's kinda like a beef pot pie..

My wife took the recipe for the meat pie and said "Why don't we try it this way instead.." Then left some stuff out and added some stuff.

Regular pie crust, brown up some hamburger, add some chopped onions, some beef buillion and some fried potatoes.

Then glaze the top crust with beaten egg so's it'll be nice & shiney golden brown.

I did a Google search on "Australian Meat Pie" and "Meat Pie Floater" & found bunches of recipes..

(I learned to cook 'cos I didn't want to DIET)

Oh yes... Also called "Pasties"

I'm told that this is pronounced "Past-ee" not "Paste-ee"

I'm sure you could eat the latter, but you'd get thrown out of the Stip Club. Image
