Max's Failed Getaway
Max's Failed Getaway
Hi everyone. I just had a thought on why Max's Interceptor was fairly easily caught by Lord Humangus' 6 wheeled nitrous truck. I know it's just a movie but I was kinda thinking by now the Interceptor was down on some HP compared to when it was new obviously. But then it hit me that he loaded the car down with "as much juice as he could carry". That would almost certainly add I'm guessing 600-800lbs of extra weight. Poor Max didn't count on a nitrous vehicle pursuing him. Just my thoughts. Later fellas.

Re: Max's Failed Getaway
A very good point you've got there!

Re: Max's Failed Getaway
I don't think that's really the case.
My view is that the story in RoadWarrior is all about the antagonists getting stronger the protagonists getting weaker.
The Black-on-black is shown to be demonstrably in a state of ruin by the time we get to RoadWarrior.
Here is the effectiveness of the Interceptor in the original scripted opening chase.
Here is the scene with the Humungus Machine chasing down the Black-on-black.
While the fuel load, which would have made the Black-on-black just as unstable as it would heavy, is a solid bit of pragmatism, everything that happens is a conceit to satisfy the story. In this scene, it's all about making Max look comparatively weak so his arc can complete the finale has higher stakes.

So, even at this stage, it's clear that the Black-on-black is matched.MAX guns the big motor. The black-on-black takes off. MAX hits the supercharger - surging away.. mThrough the rear window we see WEZ lead the other nine vehicles down the hill, giving chase... High angle helicopter shot of the chase. The Marauders' vehicles are strung down the highway. Only the fastest, led by Wez, can keep up with the black-on-black.
Here is the scene with the Humungus Machine chasing down the Black-on-black.
The message here is strong. The Humungus machine is something special. It's the Marauder's getting stronger than the police. If Max can't escape them in the Black-on-black then the compound dwellers don't stand a chance. The Humungus machine rockets onto the road and begins to overtake the other six Marauder vehicles one by one... MAX is giving the black-on-black all its got... In the Humungus machine WEZ, the GAYBOY BERSERKER, and the TOADIE have left the rest of the Marauders well behind... The big machine seems to be encroaching on the black-on-black. WEZ shouts instructions to the GAYBOY BERSERKER who comes to his side. The GAYBOY BERSERKER slides behind the wheel as WEZ clambers forward onto the front of the vehicle. The GAYBOY BERSERKER reaches down. His hand rests on a toggle switch next to three gas bottles marked: At the front of the vehicle WEZ grabs a huge exhaust pipe jutting into the air. In spite of the heat, he tears the pipe off the mounting. He signals to the GAYBOY BERSERKER. The GAYBOY BERSERKER flicks down the toggle switch: there is a mighty roar matched by a massive surge of power in the Humungus machine... The TWO VICTIMS on the front scream... MAX is bewildered by the massive acceleration. The Humungus machine leaps alongside the black-on-black. WEZ swings the chrome pipe down through the front windscreen - into MAX'S face.

"Wrong, we fight for a belief. I stay."
Re: Max's Failed Getaway
Well im not sure that we disagree. Max car was not what it was in the original movie. It was down on power. Im simply stating that the added 6-800lbs of fuel really hurt Max's gettaway chances. Lord Humangus vehicle in my opinion would not have been able to catch the original fresh BOB with no weight and tank full of Main Force Nitro

I think the loaded tanks is a pretty good observation
I always wondered how that akward looking truck machine suddenly runs down the ducks guts
But their are also conceits for story telling like wez standing on the hood at 130 (?) miles an hour swinging a exhaust stack without flying off into the road like an unsecured baseball cap
Maybe it was written just for poetic suggestion,
but thats such a brilliant script that it lends itself to some real world explanations better then fury road does for example
In fact now that I think about it, the Landau and a dune buggy were fast enough to hold the chase against the BoB in the beginning WITH the blower running So maybe the BoB engine IS going to pot
I've heard that you're supposed to rebuild a blown engine pretty often and Max doesn't have a well equipped garage

Re: Max's Failed Getaway
The flipside is that only those with the fastest vehicles have managed to survive by that point - all of the baddies are the distilled fastest and most brutal people, the survivors of a high-speed Battle Royale, if you will - so everyone is at least as fast as Max because they have to be.RobThom wrote:... the Landau and a dune buggy were fast enough to hold the chase against the BoB in the beginning WITH the blower running ...
Re: Max's Failed Getaway
Also take into account the Porsche theory,
of weight to distribution
A muscle car is very beautiful and very intimidating,
and gets chicks
But a Porsche is as fast as a muscle car or faster,
by being lighter weight
That doesn't explain the Landau, but maybe the sand buggy?
BTW, you have read the realeased script?
Its a beautiful script
Its a little different
They have both been novelized
but they are rare and pricey
Thats deliberately mentioned in the script that everybody is chasing him at first until only that last fastest few are left Its still interesting to me that the dune buggy is one of those
But I heard that Porsche engines and VW engines are swappable without too much trouble
So?

Re: Max's Failed Getaway
The BoB may have been laden down by fuel weight
But Wez´s pursuit vehicle didn´t run on air and must have been equally laden down.
Between the escape from the compound and the overtake scene, it moves from darkness to daylight = some hours. So both vehicles must have had some heavy fuel on board to GTF out with full Speed. Wez´s wheels had some crazy amounts of NOS on board (three bottles), maybe also Max was snoozing too on the Arrival of daylight since he didn´t see the Wezmobile catching up?
