Where is/was the Sci-Fi? (Spoilers)

There were warnings from last year screenings that there would be a Sci-Fi element ala Indy 4. This definitely had me worried but I didn't see anything as atrocious as a spaceship flying off at the end.

Did Miller & Co. ever intend for their to be Sci-Fi in MM4? If so, what happened?

First you must understand the term Science Fiction

Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginative content such as futuristic settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universes and extraterrestrial life. It usually eschews the supernatural, and unlike the related genre of fantasy, its imaginary elements are largely plausible within the scientifically established context of the story. Science fiction often explores the potential consequences of scientific and other innovations, and has been called a "literature of ideas."

The settings for science fiction are often contrary to those of consensus reality, but most science fiction relies on a considerable degree of suspension of disbelief, which is facilitated in the reader's mind by potential scientific explanations or solutions to various fictional elements. Science fiction elements include:

*A time setting in the future, in alternative timelines, or in a historical past that contradicts known facts of history or the archaeological record.
*A spatial setting or scenes in outer space (e.g. spaceflight), on other worlds, or on subterranean earth.
*Characters that include aliens, mutants, androids, or humanoid robots and other types of characters arising from a future human evolution.
*Futuristic or plausible technology such as ray guns, teleportation machines, and humanoid computers.
*Scientific principles that are new or that contradict accepted physical laws, for example time travel, wormholes, or faster-than-light travel or communication.
*New and different political or social systems, e.g. dystopian, post-scarcity, or post-apocalyptic.
*Paranormal abilities such as mind control, telepathy, telekinesis, and teleportation.
*Other universes or dimensions and travel between them.

So all the movies fit into the term Sci - Fi its not just all about spaceships and aliens

I think it was more about stuff like Furiosa's arm not being explained etc than it not being grounded like say, the first film.

I'm just glad Miller didn't veer too far off the path and do something silly like Indy 4. Of course, Miller didn't have to worry about George Lucas getting his feces stained hands on his movie..huge plus right there.

The SciFi elements are much more pronounced in The Art Of Fury Road, if you look at the earlier artwork for Immortan Joe, youre looking at something more akin to a Star wars movie. Some of the designs are even quite Gigerish. I find the Joe that's ended up on screen slightly disappointing by comparison, would have looked better, for me, without hair.
People eater's original artwork in the book shows an even more deformed & grotesque character. A lot of the artwork in the book is more akin to 2000AD, heavily stylised, very futuristic. The actual film is very toned down in comparison to the book. I think to have made a movie more akin to the designs in the book would have cost even more money and needed CG and extensive prosthetic work to realise the characters. The landscapes in the book show more remnants of civilisation, skyscrapers etc. I know many have fell in love with the endless sand dunes in this version of the wasteland but I had sort of hoped for more, maybe the wrecked ships/planes etc glimpsed in the game. We didn't even see Gas town properly.

I think I'm really in the minority here but I would have liked that extra SF touch maybe in this film, especially with it being further set in the future, obviously not UFOS etc but perhaps more mutated characters or creatures used sparingly.

The original films were great at being grounded in reality for all the futurisms and I wouldn't have them any other way but this was a reimagining and its something I'd have liked, especially after reading the book. If I had seen the book before the movie then I'm pretty certain that I would have still been blown away by the action setpieces but felt (apart from the Citadel) underwhelmed by this Wasteland. For me the MM2 version had more character. It's beautifully shot but apart from the canyon it seems just to be empty dunes and gets a bit repetitive. At least the Bog scene breaks it up a bit

Even though it would have been CGI I kinda hoped for a bit here and there. What bugged me more was that they didn't have anything, and then they threw in that electrical wire tower when we meet the Mothers, it felt like a cheat. Like they wanted to give this sense of nothingness, that's fine, but then throw a lone tower like that into the movie, come on .
