Mad Max Movies & Heavy Metal Music..

Anyone else think that they go hand in hand, I remember when I first saw MM2 back in 83, I was into Maiden, ACDC, Motorhead and then later all the heavier stuff like Metallica etc. MM2 just seemed like a heavy metal song brought to life, all the leather and studs and fast vehicles, despite not a note of rock music present in it. It seemed like the ultimate Judas Priest promo video. They just go so hand in hand, even MM3 visually. I had all the gear back in the day, the fingerless leather gloves, leather jacket, bullet belt etc ( 30 years ago mind!)

Ive come across a few good mash ups on Youtube before now blending Metal & Max together. I also like the heavier end of Classical Music like Wagner & Holst and Brian May's scores seemed to echo this as well.

Even though Im still unsure of the flamethrowing guitar player in Fury Road (looked silly in that red thing) it felt almost like an acknowledgment of hard, guitar music as being a kindred spirit.

Anyone else here that grew up on metal (or punk?) alongside the movies & still likes it now, or a bit of classical?? Northern Soul and the Apocalypse somehow just don't mix as well

I don't think the original trilogy has some heavy metal elements to it, definitely some S&M influences and maybe a tiny bit of musical influences in MMBT (Tina Turner's contribution and all, Angry Anderson).

FR definitely has some metal DNA in it. It was mentioned at the Sydney Opera House Premiere that the Doof Wagon is Peter Pound's love letter to metal and Mad Max.

Never did associate it with metal. Punk, goth and industrial always seemed a better fit. I suspect it has more to do with what the viewer likes, although at the time of the first two movies, not many metal bands looked anything like the stuff in the movies. I think they started to adopt the look and mix it with spandex and hairspray....

I've always though Metallicas 'Wherever I may roam' sounds like it belonged in the Mad Max universe.
If i weren't for a thing called copyright I'd be doing a fan vid of the BoB with that song, but It just wouldn't last long on youtube.
As for the soundtracks in Mad Max, I love the scores in the first two, and think the one in BT dates the movie a lot, so I'm glad they put no 'contemporary' (1981)music in RW.

Im sure Ive seen a MM2/Metallica video on Youtube, might have been a few years back; have a go, mate. You never know, it might be ok, im pretty sure The Ace Of Spades one is still on there. I wish I knew how to do these things, Id love to make a montage of all the villains from the Max world, incl the FR clips and add it to something really heavy like Dimmu Borgir or something.

I liked The Exploited too back in my metal days, they are very much a metal/punk crossover band and especially in the early days had a very MM2 Marauder look to them.

Ive read also that Motley Crue were very inspired by MM2 for their look they had around The Shout At The Devil album back in 1983.

This last one isn't a Mad Max one but it's my favourite of all the movie/music mash ups out there, it's a Black Metal band called Summoning mixed to a montage. of all the really dark scenes from Lord Of The Rings, all the Mordor stuff etc. Not to everyone's taste but I like it

Early MTV videos were greatly influenced by the Mad Max look. The Police- Synchronicity, Tom Petty- You Got Lucky, many others all jumped on the post apocalyptic band wagon. Punk and heavy metal easily adopted the look with the party in hell attitude, rough, edgy, and non conformist.
It's a fine example of how Mad Max has affected the culture even among people who may have never seen it but still understand what "Thunderdome" implies. Much in the same way that people who have not watched Star Trek still know what " beam me up Scotty" implies.

Having given it a recent listen, this track from Killing Joke actually fits well with Fury Road. Even the lyrics fit the movie. Some re-editing of the FR trailer to fit the lyrics would tie them together even more.

Great observation! Makes sense as George Miller is a fan of Hard Rock and Opera, and the whole movie is operatic for sure.
