I wonder how would it look like if Heath Ledger plays Max. Tom Hardy is perfect but just wondering.Nightwalker wrote:I've voted 9. It is an excellent movie. The biggest thing is the change of the character Max. But because it is also played by an other actor, it's not that bad.

I think Heath would pulled it off nicely. He did a great job with the Joker in the Batman film. That was really insane acting.

"UNDERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"OVERSTEER" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"HORSEPOWER" is how fast you hit the fence.
"TORQUE" is how far you take the fence with you.

I voted 9; I think for me only MM2 rates as 10 as it did far more on limited resources than George accomplished with an enormous budget.
A second viewing may knock it down (as I suspect) to a (very solid) 8 or maybe (unlikely though) push it close enough to 10.
The trick is to balance expectations, both under and over, with actual reality. Also if comparing to previous movies, to factor in nostalgia and also to allow for respective budgets, creativity within budget bands etc.
That's why for me, Fury Road sits level with MM1. I can't rate it higher as they are so different and I can't rate it more just because of bigger 'eye candy'. It can be argued George Miller achieved more with that miniscule budget than he has done with FR. The visuals in FR should be expected even given, taking into account the time, money and resources available. They both get a 9 from me. As I said MM2 gets a 10.
Incidentally, I'll give MM3 a 7. I give that for its high production values but it's disappointing action and kiddie friendly feel prevent it from more. On another day I could easily knock it down to 6.

Went to see the Road Warrior as a kid and remember going home and couldn't sleep from the excitement. It was an absolute work of art. Then I went to see Thunderdome also as a kid and remember walking out kinda disappointed. Unfortunately, Fury Road left me disappointed as well with being to over the top and lacking my dream car interceptor action. The voices didn't sound aussie to me and the landscape didn't look like the outback wasteland of the 80s with the reddish dirt and all. The wierd guys on stilts in the swamp left me saying wtf? Dark Crystall??? The guitar guy with flames was just stupid. That being said I'm still thankfull it was made! I also thought Hardy did a convincing job as Max. The visuals were nice and some of the music score was reminiscent of MM2. There were also plenty of nods towards the older movies that was cool. All of the cars were full of detail and it must have cost a fortune to produce. I give it a 7 also. We are very lucky Miller even brought back the franchise so props to him. It's his vision not mine.

I don't know why but the chessy intro grows on me. When Hardy's calm, gruff voice spoke in the background of the black screen, i've got goosebumps.

Overall story arc not badly thought out: I liked the element of the canyon.
Meeting of the two hero leads very poor: Silly and uninteresting...
The movie starts out very, very strong, but the action elements gets weaker and weaker near the end, where they tend to get confused: Not really clear how some bad guys are offed, or even how some of the good guys are either... Not really clear near the end if a major achievement is really achieved, or how, as the screen momentarily fades to black and then shifts to somewhere else...
The outlandish vehicles helped the story, and blended surprisingly well with it: A true highlight of the entire film.
I thought not enough is said about why everyone lives in a desert, and where all the vegetation went: OK water is lacking, but why does it never rain? And if water is lacking, would distribution be so wasteful as to to pour it directly into the sand?
As a villain Immortant Joe is not original but he works, as did the other villains, except for the offscreen offing of one that was a real downer I thought...
Furiosa was fine, if not quite rich enough in nuances to be great. Max himself did not work at all I thought: He acted and even looked different at various points... I did like him better in the mumbling and downbeat parts... Max was never my favourite thing about the movies anyway.
I'd give it a 6 out of ten, maybe a 7 for the vehicles, and also the Citadel!.

They live in the desert because the populated coastal regions were destroyed in a nuclear war as Miller mentioned in an interview
The water supply is artesian water that is underground up pumped to the surface by Joe and co so he controls the flow which attracts people to the area , the rainfall in most deserts is minimal so it may rain but not enough to establish plant life etc
You can tell in the end the people hate Immortan for being such a control freak and they cheer Max and Furiousa.

I just got back from seeing it (with two friends, one of which I just today had a Mad Max 1-3 marathon with). Sensory overload much. I can't think properly about it right now, but it was brilliant. Great acting, soundtrack (it did sound a bit Brian May at points), cinematography, and of course, brilliant action.
9/10 for now.
